There was a great article in the Daily Herald/Chicago Tribune this summer concerning "patriotic songs" (which includes the national anthem) and how the young generation is not being taught these songs. If I remember correctly, the article had to do with young people identifying themselves as "american" vs "students of the world". Songs that were mentioned in the article: "This Land is Your Land", "America the Beautiful", etc...

Many schools currently are not teaching these songs to kids. As for Haserts' performance, I understand your criticism and reasoning. I still think the national anthem is a difficult song and that many "patriots" (liberal, conservative, off-their-rocker) would goof.

Note to self: Always have a copy of song when I have scheduled to sing this song AND stand away from the microphone.

No, but you CAN fault a I'm-more-patriotic-than-you, wrap-myself-in-the-flag, get-my-face-on-TV-with-this-publicity-stunt Republican, for getting the name AND the words of our national anthem wrong. If a guy can support a Constitutional amendment banning flag burning, then he should support an amendment that bans screwing up the anthem.

And by the way, I learned the song in elementary school, as did just about everyone else I know.

2 things...

1. Many people do not know the lyrics to this song/poem. You are not going to learn these lyrics in school.
2. (California surfer accent) "Who owns the language, man! Keep my english free, baby! This is America! Love it or leave it!"

Roseanne Barr meant to sing her anthem poorly and create a scene. Dennis Hastert was just trying to sing the anthem and performed poorly. We can't fault a person from trying.

[edited]
