Chinese Restaurants: Ma Ma Wok
Monday, 2004 January 5 - 1:11 pm
Finally, a place to get dim sum in Cary. Very good, but it wasn't quite what I expected.

I was excited to find that a new Chinese restaurant was opening nearby, and especially excited to find they were offering dim sum. I went there last weekend with my girlfriend to try it out.

When we got there, we wondered: where were the carts rolling around with all the different yummy (and mysterious) little dishes? Upon being seated, we realized that this dim sum was different: we were supposed to check off what we wanted on a paper menu, kind of like ordering sushi a la carte.

Actually knowing what all the dishes were, took some of the fun out of it.

But, the food was plentiful, cheap, and very tasty. The sliced conch dish was especially good; and the jumbo fried noodle tasted like funnel cake (minus the sugar coating). The service was friendly and attentive, if not always fluent in English. (The majority of the patrons were Chinese; that struck me as a good sign.)

We ended up getting way too much food, and taking a bunch home. Here's a hint: any one dish is enough to share among four people, if you just want a dim-sum-sized taste of it. For two people, three dishes is probably enough for one meal.

All in all, the food was very good for the money, and the experience was enjoyable.
