Apple Watch: The New iPods | Monday, 2004 July 19 - 11:55 pm |
Apple introduced slightly smaller and significantly cheaper iPods today. Here's a brief report. Apple introduced new versions of its 20GB and 40GB iPods today. The most notable changes are the inclusion of the click-wheel, similar to the one found on the iPod Mini, and the 50% battery life improvement (thanks to improved energy conservation software). The really good news, though, is in the $100 price drop. Lots of folks expected 60GB iPods to appear, but I'm guessing Apple is supply-constrained on 60GB hard drives, and doesn't want to deal with the bad press of another product shortage. Other notable rumors that turned out false: multiple colors (the white iPod is still iconic, so why change it?) and a color screen (what would be the point of a high-cost color display on a pure music device?). We're still waiting for the Airport Express integration, though. Will it come, thereby uniting the music product family, or will Apple withhold it to keep the Mac at the center of the digital hub? Hmm. I have a feeling a third-party developer (perhaps Belkin) will pounce on this if Apple does not. |
