Apple Watch: iMac G5? | Sunday, 2004 August 29 - 6:04 pm |
French Mac site MacBidouille has broken a story about supposed pictures of the upcoming iMac G5. In the story (English translation here), there are pictures of a flat-screen device partially unboxed, supposedly in an elevator in the Charles de Gaulle airport. The rumor sites and Mac forums are swirling with speculation. The pictures do align with earlier reports of the iMac G5 design: a flat panel screen with all the computer components mounted behind it. I don't believe the pictures are Photoshop fakes; if they are, they're pretty good (the shadows and reflections seem right on). So what is this thing? It don't think it's a portable tablet. It seems too big for that, and a tablet doesn't seem to fit Steve Jobs' plans. I don't think it's just a monitor. The housing is too thick. It might be some prototype that's not supposed to be released to the public. My bet is that it is the iMac G5, with a 17" screen, and a price in the $1300 range. The box seems small; where are the keyboard and mouse? Maybe that's not the production box design. Specs would probably include a 1.6 or 1.8 GHz G5, 256MB of RAM, and 80GB hard drive, built in Airport and Bluetooth, yadda yadda yadda. I have to think there's something more going on, though, something more revolutionary. Otherwise, it would be the same sort of niche-targeted machine that the previous iMac was. Perhaps some new wireless trick? Or home entertainment integration? Built-in toaster? The possibilities are endless. I'll keep monitoring the Mac web sites, but we'll probably see an official announcement soon anyway. The Paris Apple Expo starts Tuesday. |
