Quick Random Notes | Monday, 2005 April 4 - 9:11 pm |
I have to rush through these last few thoughts, because the NCAA basketball championship is starting. Just a few quick notes: Pinky has got me craving a proper New York bagel, crunchy on the outside, and thick and chewy on the inside. You can't get them around here, as far as I know, because we don't have a real Jewish deli and bakery. That means no marble ryes, no really good kosher dill pickles (except sometimes the pickles you get at the State Fair), no really good pastrami and corned beef... you'd think that with all the Yankee transplants around here, there'd be a demand. But every deli that's opened up has gone belly-up. Deli, belly... there's a pun in there somewhere. I did my taxes yesterday. I owe money to the IRS for the first time in I-don't-know-how-long. I suppose in a way it's a good thing, because partly this is because I didn't lose money in the stock market this year. But it still kind of sucks not to get that surprise payday. Burnt popcorn sucks. Someone burnt a bag of microwave popcorn at the office last Friday. That smell is the most powerful smell in the universe. I'd rather share a cubicle with Farty McFarterson than deal with the smell of burnt popcorn. DIE, POPCORN BURNERS, DIE. I'm reluctantly rooting for UNC. I am a North Carolina State fan by association (and by default, since North Carolina State is the only team who hasn't recently beaten the University of Michigan in a high-profile sports event). Because of that, and because I'm rooting for the Big Ten, I'd like Illinois to win tonight. But I need UNC to win to help me in the office pool. Such a dilemma. Okay, off to watch the game. Go Illini (but secretly, Go Tar Heels.) |

Blah for paying taxes! I usually have to pay but because I made waaaay less money than usual last year, we actually got a refund. First time in ages. And dammit, now I want a bagel. |

I have settled for Bruegger's best - which really isn't so great. But I have never even seen an authentic deli here, in my decade-plus of NC living. I still long for the place in Oak Park that I used to go with my dad. It was a little intimidating, with very dry salamis hanging from the ceiling. And a UNC win makes for a happy office and happy husband - so I'm happy! |

I'm no fan of the round ball, but I did watch the game because I was out and near a television, and there was really no escaping it. The orange-clad people drinking around me were none too happy that their state representatives lost, but it wasn't nearly as bad as when the Cubs almost made it to the World Series, but didn't, and I had to witness grown men CRYING IN PUBLIC. |

There used to be Horwitz's Deli in Cary, which was a reasonable facsimile of a New York deli, but that closed. Crying in public? That only happens to me when the beer runs out. |

Thank you for paying federal taxes for me. I'm saying that to all my childless friends. We had our second child in 2003. My tax bill for 2004 was tiny. My low pay and huge mortgage also helped out. I like the Manhattan bagle shops in NC. They are not too bad. Seem a little crisper than Bruegger's. |

Oh, I hate to gloat, but I had a real New York bagel with cream chesse and lox a week ago. And becasue it was the first thing I had eaten all day, and it was 10 pm, it tasted UNBELIEVABLY good. You all are welcome to come up here anytime for the bagels. We've got plenty. |
