Apple Watch: The Scorecard
Monday, 2005 March 14 - 10:56 pm
A brief scorecard for Apple-related events: Apple wins ruling against rumor sites; CherryOS fraud-ware released; Mac Mini a success; MacNETv2 is back.

Apple won a ruling in its lawsuits against Mac rumor sites recently. Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge James Kleinberg ruled that constitutional free speech and free press protections did not extend to include harboring illegal activity, like soliciting trade secrets. He rightfully recognized that this is not a case about whether bloggers are journalists, or whether Mac rumor sites are blogs. It's a case about breaking the law. Score: lawful society one, profiteering lawbreakers zero.

Programmers picked apart CherryOS. A program claiming to run PowerPC G4 software on x86-based PCs was recently released. The web site claims that the emulated software will run at 80% of the host machine's speed. That is a highly dubious claim. But even more ridiculous is the claim that the software didn't steal from the open-source PearPC project. Programmers who have run string searches have found ample evidence that CherryOS is a blatant rip-off. Does this guy really expect to get away with this? I guess if people can fall for e-mail scams about unclaimed Nigerian fortunes, people can fall for this too. But sooner or later he'll get his ass sued and we'll all have a good laugh about it. Score: smart programmers one, scammers zero.

Banc of America predicted that the Mac Mini will have a positive impact on earnings. They reiterated their "buy" rating on the stock, and set a price target of $48.50. I can't wait for the day Apple announces how well the Mac Mini has been selling, so that "experts" like Bill Palmer will finally shut up about how they know the computer industry better than Steve Jobs. Score: Steve Jobs one, stupid pundits zero.

MacNETv2 is under new management. For the last year, Mac web readers have been abandoning MacNETv2 in droves because of the vitriolic rants of a certain writer. That writer is now gone, though, and the new all-female staff of MacNETv2 has returned to positive Mac-centric reporting. THANK GOODNESS, and welcome back. Maybe you ladies can talk some sense into Bill Palmer and Paul Thurrott too. Score: Smart Mac women one, stupid anti-Mac men zero.

Total score: good guys 4, bad guys 0. Hooray!
