How I made my PowerMac G4 quieter. For a long time, I've lived with the fact that my PowerMac G4 (and its predecessor, my PowerMac G3) sounded like wind tunnels when they were on. But this past week, I finally decided to do something about it. One of the big sources of noises was the power supply cooling fan. There was a simple hardware design oversight on Apple's part: the finger guard for the power supply did not line up with the finger guard on the outer case. Here's a picture of a model similar to mine, courtesy of Accelerate Your Mac: This misalignment causes air to make a loud whooshing noise as it passes through. The solution was to cut the metal inner finger guard out of the power supply housing completely. I was astounded: I'd estimate the noise level dropped by 20 decibels. I also removed the screws connecting the CPU fan shroud to the fan, which seemed to make less of a noise impact. But the screws didn't seem to serve much purpose anyway. I'm going to perform this bit of surgery on my old G3 also. If the noise level drops similarly, it'll make up for the fact that the G3 won't "deep sleep". |
