Okay, let me be clear: I wasn't actually part of this; it just happened right in front of me. Okay, so here's how it happened. I'm waiting in the westbound left lane of a five-lane road (with a center left-turn-only lane). Traffic is stopped because of a traffic light ahead. There's a white pickup facing me, in the left turn lane, waiting to turn into a side street. I leave a space in front of my car, because I don't want to be a jerk and block the intersection. The pickup proceeds to make the left turn, without really checking for traffic, just as a green SUV comes zipping down the right lane (from behind me). The green SUV t-bones the pickup, and sends it crashing into a third car, a red SUV waiting to turn. Maybe this diagram will help. Please excuse my limited Illustrator skills. I'm in the blue car. So here's the thing. The state highway patrol guy tells me that in this situation, I should not leave a gap. And I understand what he's saying, but come on... really? Is there anyone out there who wouldn't leave a gap in this situation? I mean, if I pull forward, I have to sit there for minutes until traffic moves, all the while enduring the dirty glare of the guy whose way I'm blocking. Do I roll down the window and explain to him that I'm doing it for his own safety? What do you think? |

Meant to say: yeesh. You were doing the right thing. Now, other people in your situation might have also tried to wave the white truck through, but that's just foolish. In that situation, I'd do what you do, but make no eye contact with the white truck (so as not to make him think I'm suggesting that he should come on through) then let the white truck do its own sensible thing -- i.e., wait to make sure there's no moving car in the lane to your right before doing its own thing. |
