Omens
Thursday, 2005 July 7 - 9:35 pm
A peculiarly connected day.

Just before I woke up this morning, I had a dream that I was at the BlogHer conference, and I met Melissa. Except, she was kind of an amalgam of Melissa, Sarah, and Diane Kruger (who played Helen of Troy in the movie "Troy" and who reminds me of my friend Natasha). You know how these things happen in dreams. Anyway, whoever this girl was, she was a little bundle of adorableness and I was hugging her tightly to squeeze out all of her charming (Charmin?) goodness.

And then NPR came on the clock radio, and they were talking about bombs in London, and suddenly I was hugging Tony Blair.

In ancient Greek mythology (like The Iliad, which was the inspiration for "Troy"), birds to the right were an omen of good fortune, and birds to the left were an omen of the gods' disfavor. I'm pretty sure there were a bunch of birds to the left just at that moment. I mean, I was listening to all this bad news about London, I was late for work, I hadn't gotten enough sleep, and to top it all off, I discovered that I had run out of clean underpants. The only pair of underpants that I had left were the ones I call "Holey Moses". It's my one remaining pair of tightie-whities and it's gotten to the point where it's more "hole" than "fabric". It's the kind of underwear your wife would make you throw away. Just as well I'm not married, because if not for Holey Moses, I would have had to go commando today.

Okay, I know, that's no great tragedy compared to the London bombings. But it still gave me anxiety.

Then, for the whole day, I was fretting about the weather, because I was worried that the remnants of tropical storm Cindy would disrupt my running plans, and I would spend another evening being Sluggo Slugworth, the Lazy Bean-Dip-Eating Slug.

But things got better. After work, I went to the park. Even though I haven't run in two weeks and the humidity was 98%, I still made a two-mile time of 17:28. It didn't rain on me. At the end, I was wheezing like an asthmatic hyena, but I was still pretty pleased with myself.

On the way back from the park, a flock of geese were crossing the road, stopping traffic. They were crossing from the left to the right.

Better days are ahead.
