Weekend Wrapup
Monday, 2005 October 24 - 8:39 am
Sorry I've been absent, folks. It was a pretty full weekend.

On Friday night, Amy and I went curling. I'm pretty sure Amy is the first girlfriend to come curling with me, no doubt shattering the illusion about my sexuality among my fellow curlers. (I'd brought male friends curling before.)

On Saturday, Amy and I did a bunch of yard work. We're planting tulips for next spring. Amy is actually one of those crazy people who ENJOYS yard work. Lucky me! Though she offered to do the work while I sat inside watching football, I couldn't be THAT much of a bum. If Amy had been out working by herself, my neighbors surely would have started speculating: "Hey look, Ken got himself a white woman."

I did manage to catch most of the Michigan-Iowa game, in which Michigan pulled out yet another close victory. Again, I was almost certain Michigan was going to lose, going into the final minutes. The game went to overtime: Michigan held Iowa to a field goal, and then converted a touchdown on third-and-goal from inside the one yard line. Final score: Michigan 23, Iowa 20. WHOOO.

Afterwards, we went to the North Carolina State Fair. Our primary goal was to go EAT. There are three main things that I like to get at the fair: the sweet corn on the cob, dipped in a vat of butter and loaded with salt and pepper; the giant turkey leg; and funnel cake. Check, check, and check. Oh, and we got ribbon fries too, mmmmmm. As I walked around gnawing the turkey leg, Henry VIII-style, I had a lot of people ask me, "Where'd you get that?" EVERYBODY loves the turkey leg.

Other than that, we just walked around looking at the people and the sights. Then we walked back to the car, a task made difficult by the fact that I'd parked about a billion miles away, in a lot where they really had no right to be charging $5 for parking. I mean, at that distance, $5 should have come with a free shuttle ride and a couple of hookers.

When we got home, we were utterly exhausted. We ate some funnel cake and then went to sleep.

Sunday, we did a little more yard work, then settled in to watch some football. MY FANTASY FOOTBALL TEAM ACTUALLY WON THIS WEEK. It's my first win EVER. I can't believe it. Daunte Culpepper threw two touchdown passes, and had no interceptions. WHOOO.

We went to the mall for a while in the afternoon, mostly just to window shop, but we ended up getting a bunch of candles at the candle store. There was a mashed-potato-and-butter scented candle which was freakin' fantastic, but I didn't end up getting that one. If I'd brought it home, I'm sure I would have tried to eat it by now.

In the evening, I made beef curry, the way Mom used to make it, with prepared sauce mix from the Asian food store. (Grand Asia Market in Cary, by the way, ROCKS.) And then to complete our Asian-themed evening, Amy and I watched "Kung Fu Hustle" on pay-per-view. It was really quite entertaining, and not nearly as silly as I feared it would be.

I'm still tired from all the activity this weekend, but in a good way. Hopefully I'll be back to blogging regularly this week.

Please tell me it was the curry mix that comes in a box and resembles squares of Hershey chocolate and which I am so tempted to serve up sometime with a tray of S'mores fixins...

(My husband and I used to go to a Japanese restaurant called Curry House on Melrose in LA. For some reason they always served their curry with a side of roasted baby potatoes, and while odd, whenever I make curry at home I always have to serve it up this way.)

Yes! That's exactly what it is. There's S&B Golden Curry, Vermont Curry, and maybe one or two other brands. But they all look like baking chocolate.

Mom would usually put in meat, potatoes, carrots, and onions... though from time to time she would just throw in whatever vegetables were at hand.
