Halloween
Tuesday, 2005 November 1 - 3:09 am
We've got spirit, yes we do.

For many years, my friend Samantha has had a big Halloween party, with elaborate sets, a clever game, and a costume contest. About five years ago, I somehow got it in my head that it was important to put a lot of work into my costume... and so I did, each year spending more time and effort than the last. I reached the point where I started taking a week off work just to prepare. Thanks to this obsession, I'm now the owner of a sewing machine, a styrofoam cutter, a hot glue gun, and an assload of cotton stuffing.

This year, Samantha did not have her party. That gave me the opportunity to recycle a costume I made a few years ago, instead of spending fifty hours making a new one. Actually, I wouldn't even have thought about wearing a costume this year, had my friend Kim not suggested that people dress up at work.

So for Halloween, I wore this:

It's one of my less cumbersome costumes (one of the few that actually allows me to sit down and get through doorways). But it's pretty darn BRIGHT too. Needless to say, I got some strange looks coming into the office. I mean, picture me in this get-up, sitting solemnly in a staff meeting, where everyone else is just wearing their normal engineer clothes. It was just a little strange.

For a while, I thought I was the only one who dressed up. But as it turns out, a few other people wore costumes too.

We paraded around the office handing out candy. We also went out to lunch in our costumes, making quite a spectacle of ourselves at the restaurant. Ahh, good times. I like it when people sacrifice their pride to have a little fun at the office. We sure could use a little more of that kind of spirit sometimes.

I don't get it. Are you a banana? Or a witch of some sort?
