What's a bigger waste of time: a protest by potato farmers, or a blog entry about that protest?

Potato farmers in England are trying to remove the term "couch potato" from the Oxford English Dictionary, saying it gives the idea that potatoes are unhealthy. They want to replace it with the phrase "couch slouch".

This is so bizarre, I had a hard time believing it was real. Listen, potato farmers, it's not EATING potatoes that we consider to be unhealthy; it's imitating sacks of them. You know, as in "lie like vegetables". There's no amount of revisionist lingo that will make sacks of potatoes seem like vibrant athletes. These words will never cross my lips: "Hey, look, it's Spudsy the Triathlon Potato Sack".

About thirty potato farmers, along with celebrity chef Anthony Worrall-Thompson, protested in London today. Apparently, associating potatoes with "crazy people" is much better than associating them with those good-for-nothing slouchy couches.

On tap for tomorrow: a sympathetic protest from other vegetable farmers, who will suggest replacing "couch potato" with the term "crunchy frog".

The fact that these potato farmers care so much about the image of their beloved crop that they staged a protest warms my heart a little. Someone should be concerned about the potato's reputation, after all.
