Hunter S. Thompson | Monday, 2005 February 21 - 9:37 pm |
Gonzo journalist and author Hunter S. Thompson committed suicide Sunday night. I didn't really know much about Hunter S. Thompson until I started playing Trivial Pursuit (the original version) in the early 80s. There, I quickly learned the lesson that "Hunter S. Thompson" was the answer to any question involving the phrase "gonzo journalism". I didn't know what that meant, though... it just made me think of this guy: It was much, much later that I learned about stuff like Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, a spectacularly ground-breaking novel (which I've still never read). I also learned the actual meaning of "gonzo journalism": to write articles without putting on the pretense of impartiality, even going so far as to emphasize the fact that we are writing through the filters of our own perceptions. So the reason I'm writing about Thompson is because blogging is gonzo journalism. I try to write about current events and politics sometimes, and if you've been reading here for a while, it should be obvious that I have opinions on just about everything I write. My writing is more and more gonzo every day. It's not that Hunter S. Thompson is the reason I write this blog. But someday when all media is dominated by us bloggers, Thompson's name will be mentioned with quiet reverence. I just wanted to take this opportunity to recognize him as a true pioneer. |

Thanks for the above. I have most of his works and they are sure worth the read if you ever have the time! I am sad that he felt he had to kill himself though. That's such an awful place for anyone to be. |
