Terri Schiavo Dies
Thursday, 2005 March 31 - 9:20 pm
While it doesn't necessarily mean the saga is over, Terri Schiavo finally passed away today.

The debate is sure to continue. Politicians on all sides will try to use Terri as a wedge issue; conservatives will decry her death as a sign of our moral failures, libertarians will denounce the government for meddling in family affairs, and liberals will be aghast at how people have tried to upend the Constitution. There's talk of impeachment for the judges that were involved (even though the judges faithfully upheld constitutional law, which is much more than can be said for the legislative and executive branches of government.) I wouldn't be surprised if the Schindlers filed a wrongful-death lawsuit.

But at least Terri can rest in peace now. I hope we can remember her like this:

rather than remembering the grotesque images of her in the hospice.

George "I Use Jesus For Political Advantage" Bush said: "Today, millions of Americans are saddened by the death of Terri Schiavo." George, that is true, but I'm more saddened by the events that led to her death fifteen years ago, than the events of today.

Tom "I Don't Care That I'm A Corrupt Buffoon" Delay said: "I never thought I'd see the day when a U.S. judge stopped feeding a living American so that they took fourteen days to die." Tom, I have news for you: Terri took fifteen agonizing years to die. Fourteen days? That was merciful by comparison.

Delay also said lawmakers "will look at an arrogant and out-of-control judiciary that thumbs its nose at Congress and the President." Meanwhile, what will hopefully happen is that we will take a look at an arrogant and out-of-control Congress and President that thumbs its nose at the Constitution, and in the end we will prove that the judiciary acted correctly.

To the Schindlers, and to Michael Schiavo: sincere condolences. I wish this hadn't been so painful for you. I hope you can move on without bitterness, though I know that will be difficult.

I wish I could say this was the last time I'll write about Terri Schiavo, but I'm sure there'll be more to come. Damn politics.

I was discussing with a friend when we would want artificial measures stopped. She said when she voted Republican, because that would mean she was already in a vegatative state.
