Secrets Are Secret for a Reason
Tuesday, 2005 May 24 - 11:35 pm
Some things are out of bounds, even for THIS blog.

I felt really pissy today, and I still kind of feel that way, but I'm not going to dwell on it. There are too many good things going on for me right now. So I won't rant about irritating coworkers and bad drivers and presumptuous Internet trolls.

Instead, I'm going to talk about secrets. Last Sunday's "Grey's Anatomy" was about secrets, and what a release it can be when one no longer has to carry them. I've certainly found it to be liberating to talk about personal things on this blog. Before, I was very tight-lipped about my dating life and my bathroom habits. Now, the whole world knows everything that goes on in those departments. Oh, have I mentioned the hemorrhoids yet? I hate the itching, but I don't mind the swelling.

I don't think I can reveal my deepest darkest secrets, though. Some secrets, if revealed, would hurt people. Even if I tried to keep things anonymous, enough people would be able to put the pieces together, that things would leak out. That would be BAD.

I'd say about half of my secrets are sexual in nature. Are other people like that? Or am I just perverted? On "Grey's Anatomy", everyone's secret had something to do with sex. I think that says something about how prudish and closed-up our society is about sex. No one has secrets about, say, food, because we all eat in public. (I suppose it's possible that someone has a secret that concerns both sex and food at the same time... I just don't want to know about it.)

There are some things that have passed the statute of limitations for secrets, like childhood crushes (right, Jen?) or that time I pooped outdoors when I was five years old. I don't think those really count any more.

What's left as a secret for me? That's tough. If I haven't already talked about it on this blog, the secret's probably too dark to tell. But I suppose I should tell you something; it wouldn't be fair to have a whole article about secrets without revealing one. So here's the deal: we'll play an on-line version of "I Never", and you can ask me a question in the comment section, but you have to answer the question too. But if necessary, we'll leave out details, to protect the innocent.

I'll be curious to see if anyone's brave enough to play.

The whole issue of named versus anonymous bloggers intrigues me. Some blogs I go to take great length to conceal their identity. No pictures, not too many distinguishing characteristics. But they can probably still be tracked down. I was bored one day and googled you. I was surprised what I figured out. I was mainly just curious about where you live and such. Not to visit or stalk. Just because I was horrendously bored. I apologize.

Yeah, questions. They have to be such that you might actually answer them.
Have you taken hallucinogenic drugs? More than once? I have, more than once. It was years ago in college, not hooked on anything. I'm sort of honest about it. It seems to be something that people really keep secret. Sometimes if it comes up at work I will clam up. I do not want everyone thinking I'm a crack-head.

Have you ever told someone about the worst thing you have ever done? I have, only to my wife, once. It was a little cathartic because I had been carrying it for so long.

Have you ever hit a car and driven away without leaving a note? I've not. I'm just lucky in that I have not hit a parked car.

Have you ever told a girl that you like her while in a drunken stupor, and been shot down? I have. Boy did I feel stupid.

This is sort of fun!

Have you ever stolen a towel from a hotel? I have not. All the hotels I stay in have cheap towels.

Nah, Google away. You'll find, though, that my name is pretty common. I'm not a science fiction writer, or a computer game developer, or a dentist, just so you know.

Hallucinogenic drugs: only weed, if that counts.

Yes, three or four people know about the worst thing that I've done.

I've never hit a car without leaving a note, though I almost did. But the car's alarm went off and everyone was looking, so I couldn't really just take off.

Girls and drunken stupor and the shooting-down, yes. Several times.

Hotel towels, no. I guess I've never been that hard-up for towels.

Thanks for playing! Next?

I've had secrets about food, actually.

When I was a kid, I used to steal jello crystals from my folks and hide them in my room, and various other similar things. I think people often have secrets about food, because there's so much stigma about eating too much or too little.

hmmmm, I think I know what this is about.....

have you ever done more than "just kiss" with Mr. Grillo-Marxuach?

What? NO. Sheesh.

yeah. that's just wrong. i mean it. wrong. i see your "sheesh" and raise you a "WTF?"

sorry i have no questions about "the secret life of ken," not because i am not interested in "the secret life of ken" but more because i like the fact that since i have more of a personal interaction with real kato enterprises than others, i kind of enjoy the fractal nature by which you find things out about your friends in conversation. in vegas. while drunk.

i think we need to ask which hallucinogenic drugs SPEAKER is doing!

javi and ken doing MORE than "just kiss"? does that imply that speaker thinks that javi and ken have even "just kissed"?

ugh! not likely! i think it is great when men kiss each other, but only if they have displayed some indication of homosexuality.

ken and javi, while both attractive (and possibly metrosexual) men, are both so heterosexual that this whole conversational thread is just freaky!
