Tennis? People Watch Tennis?
Wednesday, 2005 June 22 - 2:21 am
Only if there are good-looking people involved, I suppose.

So I don't really follow much tennis any more. Ever since John McEnroe left the game, it seems like there are so few personalities in the game. But still, the women's half of Wimbledon holds some interest for me. I mean, there's Maria Sharapova wearing shoes with 24-karat gold on them. Nothing like announcing to your opponent, "Even if you beat me, I'll still always be richer than you. And prettier." Sharapova cruised to an opening-round victory against Nuria Llagostera Vives, 6-2 6-2.

I think if I were a Russian girl and I wanted to be a tennis star, I would make up the name "Anna Smashnova" for myself. Wait, what? There's already someone named "Anna Smashnova"? For real? Damn.

The big news today is that French Open winner Justine Henin-Hardenne lost today in the first round. She had been the co-favorite, along with Sharapova, among oddsmakers. My theory is that the British people just gave up trying to pronounce her name correctly, so they covertly arranged for her early exit.

Both Venus and Serena Williams won their matches, much to the dismay of a large number of white people.

I don't really care what's going on on the men's side. Andy Roddick, I'm sure the ladies love ya, but you're no McEnroe, and I'm just not interested.

Johnny Mac rocked and always will rock! If you haven't, pick up his autobiography. It's a fun read.

As far as Sharapova goes, hey at least she can play. I seem to remember another Russian tennis hottie who was super famous but couldn't win a tournament to save her life *cough*Kournikova*cough*. Good thing Sergei Fedorov was around....

The trouble with watching tennis, for me:

1) if I watch men's tennis, I learn absolutely *nothing*, because they play with a athletics-driven strategy that I could not begin to emulate, and therefore can't really learn from.

2) if I watch women's tennis, things move slowly enough that I can learn more about strategy and technique, BUT THE DAMNED EEKING AND GRUNTING DRIVES ME APESHIT.

It's a no-win situation. Maybe I'll go watch some golf, now.
