American Idol, Week 11
Tuesday, 2007 May 1 - 9:02 pm
Ugh, Bon Jovi night... this is gonna be even worse than Miami Sound Machine night.

Phil: 7/10.
He sings "Going Down in a Blaze of Glory". Fitting. This is a very garage-band kind of performance, which I'm afraid is gonna be the theme tonight. It's shouty and cliche. Randy loved it. Paula says it's the best opening we've had all season. Simon says it was OK; he didn't hear any authenticity, and he didn't do enough to last until next week.

Jordin: 5/10.
She sings "Living on a Prayer". It's a pitchy start, and she doesn't have the right kind of voice for this. It's very karaoke, and occasionally screechy, and mostly just bad. Jordin, we expect more from you. Randy says it's "interesting"; she's not a rock girl, and the verses were rough. Paula says she went for it even knowing it was out of her range. Simon says it was out of control and verging on shrieking, though she was at a massive disadvantage given the genre.

Lakisha: 7/10.
She sings "This Ain't a Love Song". It's just not a good song, and she can't save it. It's not very challenging, and not very distinctive. She would have done better doing this a capella; the band and background singers make this sound very ordinary. Randy says she started pitchy, but she sold it by the middle of the song. Paula says her low sound is the money. Simon says he could kiss her after that.

Blake: 10/10.
He sings "You Give Love a Bad Name"... Blake-ized. Wow, he's actually making this song interesting. Jon Bon Jovi says people don't want him to mess with this song? Yes we do, dude, because the original is just soooo 80s hair metal. This is creative and brilliant. The beat boxing is perfect, and the vocals are strong. Randy says it was original and hot. Paula says it was the biggest leap of faith, and it was amazing. Simon says half the audience will hate it and half will love it, but it was the right thing to do; it was brave, and the risk-taking is what will keep him around next week.

Chris R: 8/10.
He sings "Wanted: Dead or Alive", which Chris Daughtry nailed last year. The rehearsal had me worried, but he's doing a decent job. He took some of the nasal out of his voice and put some growl in, which is good. He's no Daughtry, and it's a little bit like watching a Bon Jovi cover band, but it's not awful. Randy says he did his thing, and it was nice. Paula says he did his thing, and this is turning out to be a night. Simon says he did as much as he could, because it's not his style of music; whether it's enough to keep him around, we're not sure.

Melinda: 8/10.
She sings "Have a Nice Day". Huh, I hear cowbell. It's not awful, but this so clearly not her genre. I mean, I can't think of anything she could do differently... just maybe she should choose different music. Randy says it wasn't her best performance, but it was another good performance, like Tina Turner. (That's exactly my criticism of the song.) Paula says she's a rock star. Simon also says it was like a young Tina Turner, and vocally a different league than everyone else.

Blake 8.3

At risk:
