American Idol, Week 13
Tuesday, 2007 May 15 - 8:59 pm
Three songs for each of the three finalists. Ryan and all three judges are drunk.

Jordin: 8.3/10 (7/10; 8/10; 10/10).
Song 1. She sings "Wishing on a Star". It's jazzy and that makes it sound old. This was Simon's choice? Odd. It's a wee bit pitchy in spots, and it's not great, but it's not terrible. All in all it's pretty forgettable. Randy loves the runs, and says it's kind of like Beyonce. Paula says Simon picked a good song for her. Simon says she sung it brilliantly but didn't like the jazz arrangement.
Song 2. "She Works Hard for the Money", the producers' choice. This performance lacks energy; it's a little bit karaoke. It finishes big, and it's better than the first one, but again: forgettable. Randy says this was hot too. Paula says she was fantastic. Simon says it was a good performance; he didn't like the arrangement again, but he thought the end was very good.
Song 3. "I Who Have Nothing" is her personal choice. This is chill-inducingly good. It's a good vocal showcase for her, and she's really into it. Brilliant. Randy says it was her best of the night; very hot and nice control. Paula says it sat well in her voice, and it was a good choice. Simon says she sang it well, but part of him hated the fact that a 17-year-old sang a 60-year-old song; he thought it was old-fashioned.

Blake: 9.0/10 (8/10; 9/10; 10/10).
Song 1. He sings "Roxanne". This was Paula's choice. I actually prefer this version to the original, except for the backup singers. It's less shouty than Sting. It's not his best vocal, but it's a cool performance, and it's a good song. Randy says it's a great performance, though there were a couple "spots" in the vocal. Paula says it was fresh and she loved it. Simon says it wasn't as good as the original.
Song 2. "This Love" is the producer's choice, and it's a good one. It's definitely his style, and will he throw some beat box in there? Yes! It's not as original as we might expect from him, but it's a strong performance; it could easily be a hit for him. Randy says this is the kind of record he should make; it's a good vibe for him. Paula says he was totally in his element. Simon says he preferred this one to the first one, and it sounded comfortable; it was good.
Song 3. His choice is "When I Get You Alone". It's a beat song with "A Fifth of Beethoven" in the background; a very cool mashup. I would so buy this. No one else can do what he does. Randy says it was cool, and "aright". Paula says all three songs tonight exemplify who he is as an artist. Simon says he really liked that; the risk-taking is what he's liked about him throughout the competition.

Melinda: 8.0/10 (9/10; 8/10; 7/10).
Song 1. She sings "I Believe in You and Me", a Whitney song, chosen by Randy. Randy clearly wants to challenge her vocally. It's smooth and pretty. She really can sing anything. I think the song is a little sappy, but she's doing well. I think she's got one more gear in there, though. Randy says it was hot and well done. Paula says she was fantastic, and that this was one of her best performances. Simon says it was a very difficult song, and her best performance in the last four weeks.
Song 2. She sings "Nutbush City Limits", an Ike and Tina song. Um, what? Actually, I hate the way the producers want to pigeonhole her into a Tina Turner mold, because she's capable of so much more than this. I don't think this is a singer's song. She's doing okay, but I just can't imagine anyone under 40 buying this song. Randy says she should put a song like this on her record. Paula says "we love you". Simon says he loves that side of her, and it was a brilliant performance.
Song 3. She sings "Woman (W-O-M-A-N)". Ergh. I know this is the style she's decided to embrace, but this is a cruise-ship song, not a pop idol song. The style is old, and it's a little cliche. Randy says he sees her range, and it was hot again. Paula says she's stepping out into the spotlight. Simon says if he was going to award a place in the final to a person who was consistent week after week, it would be her.

My prediction: Jordin's youth and Blake's originality send them to the finals; Melinda, despite having the best voice of the three, goes home.
