The Hyped-Up Draft-Dodging Scandal | Tuesday, 2004 February 10 - 10:14 pm |
There's been some media buzz about the fact that Bush may have evaded his military duty during the Vietnam war. But perhaps Democrats should pick their battles more carefully. Don't get me wrong... I'm no fan of Dubya. But I don't believe that trying to dig up mud on his military service record is called for, and I don't think it's going to help Democrats win the election this fall. In principle, I'm opposed to this kind of muckraking. I think intelligence, ideals, and compassion are what makes a good President. I don't particularly care what kind of strings were pulled for him, I don't care what drugs he's done, I don't care who he's slept with. If someone can manage geopolitics and economics, AND he can score some weed and a chick and a few favors, then more power to him. So I don't want this so-called draft-dodging scandal to obscure the real issue: that Bush is simply incapable of handling the Presidency. He has made a mess of the economy and he is ruining the country's relations with the rest of the world, and he seems to have no concept of the devastating effects of his administration's policies on 99% of Americans (that is, those of us who are not Halliburton stockholders). That is the reason we need to vote him out. |
