Bush's "Clear Skies" initiative died in Senate committee today. If anyone doesn't think we're headed towards Orwell's 1984, just take a look at the wide-ranging spy powers granted to the government by the Patriot Act. Then, marvel at the doublespeak of the Bush's "Clear Skies" initiative, a bill designed to weaken the environmental protections of the Clean Air Act. Yes, that's right: freedom is slavery, peace is war, and clear skies are polluted. But in a victory for environmentalists and a blow to the Bush agenda, this initiative died in the Senate Environmental and Public Works committee. Thanks to Senator James Jeffords (I-Vt) and Senator Lincoln Chafee (R-RI), in conjunction with the Democrats on the committee, the bill deadlocked 9-9, thus preventing it from making it to the Senate floor. Republicans said the bill would cause polluting industries to leave the country... as if that were a bad thing. Hmm, there's a company nearby that wants to poison our air and water and children and puppies and orangutans, and they might pick up and leave? Gee, I dunno, are you sure we can't keep them in our backyards? We'll score that one: Bush 0, Orangutans 1. "Thanks!" |
