Vietnamese Restaurants: Lotus Leaf Cafe
Sunday, 2004 September 26 - 11:34 am
I was enthusiastic about the prospect of a new Vietnamese restaurant in Cary. Tucked away in the corner of a strip mall, the Lotus Leaf Cafe had its ups and downs.

The Lotus Leaf made the most of its strip mall location, putting up year-round outdoor seating and tasteful decor. I was glad to see that the owners seemed to really be putting forth the effort to make an inviting place.

The menu is varied and interesting, ranging from traditional Pho (soup) and vermicelli dishes to a good selection of seafood entries. Our party went for the traditional route, and by and large, the dishes were flavorful and well-executed.

There were a couple of notable problems. First, the service was horrendous: we had a new waitress. She could be excused for being slow, but not for getting our order wrong (three times) or for being difficult to communicate with. (It wasn't a language thing, by the way: she was American. She was just not very pleasant or helpful.) And there didn't seem to be a manager or anyone trying to help make things right.

The other problem was with the spring roll appetizer, which had a funny taste. (Funny strange, not funny ha-ha.) We couldn't quite place the problem, but something wasn't right.

Hopefully this place can get its act together, because Cary needs restaurants like this. But this first experience wasn't a good one.
