Apple Watch: Apple Backs Blu-Ray DVD Standard | Saturday, 2005 March 12 - 1:14 am |
So I may have to eat my words about HD-DVD versus Blu-Ray. Yesterday Apple threw its weight behind the Blu-Ray standard for the next generation of DVD players, rather than the competing HD-DVD format. Earlier I had predicted that HD-DVD, due to its lower manufacturing costs and easier backward compatibility, would become the dominant format. But now that Apple and Dell are both on board with Blu-Ray, I'm starting to change my mind. Even though big OEM drive manufacturers like Toshiba, NEC, and Sanyo are backing HD-DVD, it won't mean a thing if no computer manufacturers install the drives as standard equipment. In this case, I'd be glad if my earlier prediction turned out to be wrong, because it'll be nice to see the superior technology win out over the cheaper one. For a change. |
