Apple Watch: New iMacs Released | Wednesday, 2005 May 4 - 1:00 am |
Apple updated its flat-panel iMac desktop line with faster processors, more memory, and improved graphics. On Tuesday, Apple announced upgrades for its acclaimed iMac computers. Now sporting G5 processors up to 2.0 GHz, ATI Radeon 9600 graphics, 512MB of RAM, and a 160- or 250-GB hard drive, this machine is hot. The 17" low-end machine is a great buy at $1299. Just for kicks, I spec'ed a similar Dell Dimension 8400 system and that came to $1269 (including a current 20% discount promotion), and it comes in a hideously ugly grey box that you have to hide underneath your desk. And of course with the Dell you don't get the lovely Mac OS X "Tiger" or the fabulous iLife multimedia suite. It's not quite enough of a step up from my current dual 1GHz PowerMac G4, so I'm not going to buy it myself. But I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone else. |
