Apple Watch: Record Earnings
Wednesday, 2005 July 13 - 11:28 pm
Another record-breaking quarter for Apple.

Apple announced its quarterly results today, and the news is good. Quarterly profit of $320 million, up 425% from the same quarter last year. Revenue was $2.01 billion, up 75% from last year. Gross margins were 29.7%, up from 27.8% last year. All good stuff.

Of course, when it comes to Apple, there are always those who will find a negative spin. For instance, I read this: "... the report had some potentially troubling signs. For at least the second quarter in a row, the average sales price of Apple's iPod fell in the third quarter. Apple saw about $179 for each of the digital music players it sold in the quarter, down from about $191 in the second quarter and nearly $290 in the year-ago period."

But, you see, Apple sold seven times more iPods this quarter than a year ago. If the selling price was 60% of what it was last year, and the profit margin was cut proportionally, Apple still made four times more revenue and profit. If that's a bad thing, then I guess opposite would be a good thing: that Apple would have been better off selling just one seventh the volume of iPods, and raising the price by 40%. Does THAT makes sense?

Idiots.

Mac OS X 10.4.2 is available, and it has some important bug fixes and security updates. If you're using 10.4, this is probably an update you should install right away. The only reported problems so far have to do with third-party wireless networking cards; apparently, some of them no longer work after the update.

Still no new iBooks or PowerBooks yet. I'm waiting. I have no problem with the current selection of portables, but I don't want to buy one just weeks or days before a new model is introduced. Both product lines are overdue for a refresh; the iBook line especially so, having not been updated since last October.

I still say the iBook is the best value out there. I would like one, so let me know if you have an extra.

iBooks rule. My little guy, which I try to pamper, has never let me down. I've had a few hardware issues -like when the cats ran across the living room and took the AC adapter right out of the computer with them. But that was a feline issue, not an Apple issue. And everything is still fine.

I have a student discount on some Mac products. If you're going to buy one, talk to me first.
