Geek Night
Wednesday, 2005 July 13 - 11:28 pm
Tonight's activity: sitting in front of the computer. Actually, sitting in front of three different computers, and dismantling another one.

It rained this evening, spoiling my plans to go to the driving range. So instead I've been totally geeking out here: I'm reconfiguring my home computer network. Wheeee! Oh, right, this means I didn't go to see Dressy Bessy at the 506 either. Just as well; I needed to detox today, after Pint Night last night. Pint Night, I've decided, is actually EVIL, even though it seems like such a blessing while you're in it.

Anyway, this network change was necessary, because my primary network server ("Heather", an ancient 233 MHz beige G3) was starting to act up. So she's being replaced with another machine ("Julia", a Blue-and-White G3 with a 500 MHz G4 upgrade), the computer that was previously my home media server.

Isn't this all so exciting?

But of significance to my blog audience: with this network change, I should be able to log into my home network remotely, over a VPN connection. So that means I'll be able to blog from anywhere in the world. (Without this change, in order to write blog entries away from home, I would have had to finish my new server-based blog implementation, or I would have had to transfer my whole setup from my desktop to a laptop. Either task would have been daunting.)

So in about an hour, my whole network will be offline. I figured I'd better get tonight's blog entries out before that happens. If you don't hear from me after tonight, it doesn't mean that I've died... it just means that I've done something horribly wrong to my network. Wish me luck.
