Apple Watch: New Power G5s On The Way?
Wednesday, 2005 September 28 - 7:42 am
And other news. I mean rumors.

Over the past few weeks, there have been rumors that Apple will soon be shipping new PowerMac G5s, with dual-core 970MP processors from IBM. Actually, there has been just one rumor on Think Secret. That rumor was then re-reported on a number of other sites. It's somewhat irritating when I click on a site trying to find new information about this, only to get redirected back to Think Secret again. But um, oops, I guess I'm guilty of doing the same thing.

Anyway, the speculation is that the clock speed on the G5s won't go up by much. However, even a single 970MP might provide a speed boost over two single-core 970s, due to greater efficiency in data sharing between processors. And, of course, it's probable that Apple would release dual 970MPs, for a total of four processor cores in one box. Tasty. Hey, if Genesi can build a box like this, certainly Apple can.

My general desktop upgrade strategy has been to buy a new computer if it was at least four times faster than my old one. If these new G5s come out as rumored, it might be time for me to buy.

Another widespread rumor is that the Mac Mini will receive a minor speed and feature bump. Think Secret is reporting that the new models may already be shipping, even though the upgrade hasn't been announced, presumably to allow the older models to clear the channel. New features include a slight processor speed bump, increased VRAM, a faster hard drive, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, and an 8x dual-layer SuperDrive on the high-end model.

On the iPod nano front, Apple has reportedly acknowledged that a "vendor issue" is leading to some cracked LCD screens. This issue has received widespread coverage in the mainstream media, and is threatening to give Apple a black eye. Apparently Apple will now accept returns on iPod nanos that exhibit this problem.

The major iPod nano issue for me remains that it doesn't support data transfer via FireWire (and probably never will). Only my new iBook is recent enough to support USB 2.0. Ah well; I'm still getting by with my first-generation iPod. Its bulk makes it seem downright retro compared to the iPod nano, but it's still working just fine.

After reading the following link, I thought the nanos were pretty sturdy.

I don't know, seems kinda boring to me. It's just sitting there. Sorta greenish yellow, maybe about 3 inches high. Doesn't really do much, don't know why you'd bother watching it...what...oh...THAT apple...nevermind.

We looked at Nanos over the weekend (some fool decided it would be a good idea to put an Apple store by our house) and we decided that as two of the biggest klutzes on Earth, that poor thing didn't stand a chance. We've decided that we're getting an iPod for ourselves for Christmas.
