Day 9 With TiVo
Thursday, 2005 September 29 - 9:06 am
Mostly working well... just a few bumps.

Well, the TiVo is working just fine. I had to get the software update to 7.2 in order to get "TiVoToGo", the feature that lets me transfer video to my computer. That was an lengthy process; I had to request the update via the TiVo web page, then I had to wait several days for that request to get processed. Then, after the TiVo downloaded the update, I had to restart it, and it had to churn through data for several hours again (loading the update and rebuilding its program index). But now it does seem to work.

Now, the process of transferring a 1-hour high-quality recording (1.6GB) takes two hours over the wireless network. Urgh. I might have to connect the TiVo via a wired network somehow, to speed up that process.

Another problem: though I can convert the .tivo file to a .mpg file and transfer that file to my Mac, it doesn't play right. I get audio and the first few frames of video, but then nothing. I don't have time to play with it right now, but I'm sure I'll figure it out.

Despite the difficulties, my TiVo experience is getting better and better. But I still watched "Lost" live last night. Some habits are hard to break.
