Apple Watch: Hey, Something's Coming
Tuesday, 2006 February 28 - 9:05 am
Today!

Apple is holding a special media event today, to announce some "fun new products". They really used the word "fun", and they used the plural "products".

So what, an iPod BoomBox? A new Mac Mini? A living-room entertainment-center Mac Mini? A new iBook? A video iPod? Movie downloads? I'm gonna guess "something similar to those things, but different".

An iPod BoomBox doesn't seem like a big enough deal to warrant a special announcement on its own.

A new Mac Mini is a possibility, but I don't think it'll be the living-room Mac that everyone expects. If you've ever tried to use a computer connected to your television as a real computer (and not just for playing music or DVDs), you'll know what an uncomfortable and impractical proposition that can be. If it's a living-room device, expect it to be something kinda different than a general purpose computer. If it's just a new Intel-powered Mac Mini, I don't know if that qualifies as "fun".

A new iBook might be considered "fun", if it also gives you a massage or grows marijuana or something.

A video iPod? Even though recently published photos turned out to be fake, it's still possible.

Movie downloads seem likely, if only because we know we're gonna get them eventually. That would tie in nicely with a new video device, or the thing I've long anticipated, a living-room Airport Express Video box.

We'll see in a couple of hours.

So far: a new Intel-based Mac Mini, with FrontRow and a remote control. A living room device? Maybe, if you've got a regular desktop elsewhere for actually managing all your media. It can pull video and audio off your other computer(s) via Bonjour.

Also: an iPod Hi-Fi ("boombox"), as predicted.

I once said that Disney was going to take over the world. More recently, it became obvious that Apple would finally achieve world domination. Now that Disney and Steve Jobs are working together, I believe this domination will happen sooner than later.

I will be a willing participant.
