Apple Watch: New iMacs, New Minis | Tuesday, 2007 August 7 - 10:26 pm |
Here's the rundown today's new hardware announcements. (I'll post info on the new iLife and iWork releases tomorrow.) New iMacs. This was the big announcement today. The new iMacs sport thinner, sleeker aluminum enclosures, and a new low-profile keyboard. The computer really is barely larger than a monitor and keyboard, and it looks fantastic. The 17" model has been dropped, and the 20" model now starts at $1199... that's a great value for what you get. Let's compare the lineup from before and after: Before: $1199 got you a 17" iMac with a 2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo, 1 GB RAM, and a 128MB ATI Radeon X1600. After: $1199 gets you a 20" iMac with a 2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo, 1 GB RAM, and a 128MB ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT. Before: $1499 got you a 20" iMac with a 2.16 GHz Core 2 Duo, 1 GB RAM, and a 128MB ATI Radeon X1600. After: $1499 gets you a 20" iMac with 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo, 1 GB RAM, and a 256MB ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO. Before: $1999 got you a 24" iMac with a 2.16 GHz Core 2 Duo, 1 GB RAM, and a 128MB NVIDIA GeForce 7300GT. After: $1999 gets you a 24" iMac with a 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo, 1 GB RAM, a 256MB ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO, and $200 to spare. Hard drive sizes have been bumped slightly, and there's also a 2.8 GHz Core 2 Duo Extreme option. For anyone looking to get a Mac, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend an iMac. These things are beautiful and powerful; they're quite possibly the best desktop computers ever made. New Mac Minis. The Minis quietly got a modest improvement... it didn't even merit a press release. Before: $599 got you a Mac Mini with a 1.66 GHz Core Duo, a 60GB HD, and 512MB RAM. After: $599 gets you a Mac Mini with a 1.83 GHz Core 2 Duo, an 80GB HD, and 1GB RAM. Before: $799 got you a Mac Mini with a 1.83 GHz Core Duo, an 80GB HD, and 512MB RAM. After: $799 gets you a Mac Mini with a 2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo, a 120GB HD, and 1GB RAM. So in short, faster and more efficient processors, twice the RAM, and a bigger hard drive. A small but much-needed improvement. Tomorrow: information about iLife '08 and iWork '08. |
