Wednesday Night, and I'm Doing Fine
Wednesday, 2005 April 27 - 10:45 pm
Sure enough, Queen B was the harbinger of good things.

Today I finally went running again, and I was determined to post a good time because I've been slack for so long. I set what I thought would be an 18-minute pace for the two miles, but I absolutely DEMOLISHED that. As my friend Mark in college would have said, "I totally decimated it into eleven pieces." My time? 17:15. Yay, me!

So I feel good about the way the week is going. I've had two social events so far, and I now have THREE events scheduled for Friday: lunch, drinks after work, and a party at night. I've also been fairly productive (as compared to last weekend): I got my state inspection for my car, I got my passport photo taken (more on this in a moment), and I pulled seven weeds out of my yard. Only 7,993 weeds to go.

Also, today I ate fish tacos. YUM! Have there always been fish tacos in the world, or did they suddenly spring into existence a couple of years ago? I'd never heard of them growing up. Today I had them at On The Border, which is a cheesy chain restaurant, but they do make some tasty food there. We had a lovely waitress, Pam, who was nice enough to earn the extra $0.50 tip that I reserve for my favorite lunchtime waitresses. I'm afraid there's no interesting flirting to report, though.

To top it all off, I actually felt like I was doing something interesting at work today: I cleaned up years of cruft that's been building up in our company's software. That activity was very satisfying to my OCD.

Okay, so back to the passport photo. I went to the Fedex Kinko's to have it taken, because it was conveniently right next door to the Barnes and Noble where I was shopping at the time. I walked up to the Fedex Kinko's flunky and he told me to stand in front of a white screen. (By the way, try to say "Fedex Kinko's flunky" five times fast.)

So I stood there frozen as he held a digital camera about five inches from my face. Dude, do you not have a zoom lens on that thing? And just as I reached the peak of discomfort, he said, "There's going to be a REALLY BRIGHT FLASH." So I recoiled and grimaced, and of course that's when he took the picture.

So now, for the next ten years, I will have a passport in which I look like an escaped mental patient. Or perhaps, a mental patient who would have escaped had it not been for his fear of bright flashing lights. Oh, and by the way, Mr. Flunky, thank you SO much for bringing out that second chin.

But this is still a good week, and not even a stint in the Two Chins Mental Hospital will ruin it for me. Somebody take my temperature, because I'M BURNING UP OVER HERE. Whoo hoo!

Oh yeah... did I mention the drinking?

Fish tacos are among the greatest food things on earth. There is much debate about their exact origin, but everyone places said origin near San Diego or south on the Baja Peninsula. When you're in Cali for the Blogher conference, see if you can find a Rubio's somewhere in Santa Clara. They make (according to some) the original and best fish tacos. Crispy fish, crunchy cabbage (not lettuce!) and a very tasty white sauce that makes everything perfect together.
