Today's Condiments
Monday, 2005 May 23 - 11:37 pm
... and, a dating update.

For dinner tonight, I made half-assed, quick-and-dirty, poor-man's fish tacos. I used frozen fish fillets, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and spicy ranch dressing. It actually wasn't bad, but I should make my own remoulade, because the spicy ranch dressing just isn't going to cut it.

On my run today, I decided to push it... p-push it real good. After taking the first two miles in a relatively stately 18:05, I LITERALLY went the extra mile, and ended up finishing three miles in 27:13. I passed a cute girl running in the opposite direction four times, which was kind of a little reward for me. Unfortunately, she had headphones on, and I always feel like headphones are a "Don't Flirt With Me" sign. You know, "La La La La La I'm Not Listening." But we did smile at each other each time we passed.

So GunGirl is out of town, but when she gets back, we're going to meet. We upgraded our first meeting from coffee to dinner, which is always a risk. I mean, what if you realize there's no chemistry even before the drinks arrive? Then you've still got a whole meal to sit through. But I think, in this case, that won't be a problem. And apparently, my whole Internet audience thinks so too! But look, there's no indication yet that we're actually going to end up dating, so don't start ringing any wedding bells, okay?

Anyway, GunGirl may have some competition, because another girl on-line has made contact with me. She shall be known as ImprovGirl, because she's involved with improv theater. She's cute, she has a sunny smile, and she seems to have an upbeat demeanor. I'll write to her and see what she's all about, and maybe after a while she'll be reading this blog too.

Something I finally realized today... my cell phone has an automatic keypad lock feature. I really ought to have looked for that before; that would have prevented me from inadvertently calling Anna ten times in a row, a few weeks ago. Geez, I've only had this phone for OVER A YEAR.

I have to put out an injunction against the pseudo-word "alright". It's not "alright", it's "all right". Here's what the American Heritage Dictionary has to say:

Usage Note: Despite the appearance of the form alright in works of such well-known writers as Langston Hughes and James Joyce, the single word spelling has never been accepted as standard. This is peculiar, since similar fusions such as already and altogether have never raised any objections. The difference may lie in the fact that already and altogether became single words back in the Middle Ages, whereas alright has only been around for a little more than a century and was called out by language critics as a misspelling. Consequently, one who uses alright, especially in formal writing, runs the risk that readers may view it as an error or as the willful breaking of convention.

Lastly, does anyone have a useful mnemonic for remembering all the Supreme Court justices? (Hamster?) I always forget Stevens somehow.

Didja know that Jones Soda Company makes a Fish Taco flavored drink? You could drink it with your fish tacos! But maybe it was only a limited edition thing.

Aren't they the same guys that make the Turkey and Gravy soda?

Those guys are nuts.

That's them, those sick bastards. They also made Green Bean casserole soda around Thanksgiving last year. Yum!

excellent. i've never liked 'alright'.

it is obvious that you don't have a toddler if you didn't know that your phone had a keypad lock on it.

good job running! remind me not to race with you.

Cool fish taco tip-tilapia works great with as the fish in a fish taco. Nice and light, and I think it's what fish sticks are made of.

Personally, I don't think it's ever possible to really know all of the features on the average cell phone anymore. I am fairly certain that if I find the right button, it WILL cook for me.

Just to clarify... I knew I could lock the keypad, I just didn't know there was a feature that would automatically lock the keypad after fifteen seconds of inactivity. Until, that is, I actually looked for that feature.
