College Football Recap: Week 8
Monday, 2011 October 24 - 10:59 pm
Michigan was idle; N.C. State gets a solid ACC win; several big upsets among top teams.

N.C. State 28, Virginia 14. Well, as expected, Virginia imploded with four turnovers. Mike Glennon was fairly steady; he threw two interceptions but both were inconsequential. The rushing game returned to its usual underperforming ways but the defense was able to keep Virginia in check most of the day. The previously bleak-looking season suddenly looks more promising: with eminently winnable games against UNC, BC, and Maryland, a bowl game still might be in the cards.

Other Notable Games

#1 LSU rolled over #20 Auburn 45-10. With #2 Alabama also winning big over Tennessee, the SEC is currently just a two-team race.

Texas Tech shocked #3 Oklahoma 41-38. TT's wide open passing spread offense rolled up a staggering 452 yards passing. Oklahoma is still an awful good team and will probably win out the rest of its games, but a BCS title bid may be out of the picture, what with plenty of undefeated contenders still remaining.

#6 Wisconsin could have been one of those undefeated contenders had it not given up a 44-yard Hail Mary pass by Michigan State with no time remaining, losing 37-31 in what has to be the finish of the year. Wisconsin will be heavily second-guessed for calling two timeouts while the game was tied during MSU's final drive, thinking it could get the ball back for a game winning attempt of its own. Those timeouts gave MSU enough time for a heave into the end zone and a miraculous finish. These two teams may yet meet again in the Big Ten championship, but it looks like the Big Ten will be left out of the BCS title game too.

#7 Clemson socked North Carolina 59-38.

#8 Stanford blew out #25 Washington 65-21. I don't get why Stanford isn't ranked higher.

#9 Arkansas squeaked by Ole Miss 29-24... this is the third-best team in the SEC? It's a big gap between #2 and #3.

#19 Houston remained undefeated, beating Marshall 63-28. With their weak schedule, though, Houston may go undefeated and not even make a BCS game, much less the title game.

#21 Penn State managed to hang on against Northwestern 34-24. Penn State is still very suspect, especially on offense, but they've quietly improved to 7-1 and now leads the Leaders division of the Big Ten.

Miami (FL) clobbered #22 Georgia Tech 24-7. Georgia Tech is suddenly struggling after a pretty good start, and their next two games are Clemson and Virginia Tech. Yikes.

Purdue beat #23 Illinois 21-14. Oh, Ron Zook... you are such a Ron Zook.

Syracuse beat #15 West Virginia 49-23. Syracuse is surprisingly in contention in the Big East, thanks in part to defensive coordinator Scott Shafer, who used to be the DC under Rich Rodriguez at Michigan. There is a strong feeling among Michigan folk that Shafer never really got the chance he deserved at Michigan. I don't think we'll ever really know the answer to that.

Michigan plays Purdue next week; Michigan will be favored but I'll be nervous, what with the MSU loss still fresh in the players' minds and Purdue on a slight upswing. N.C. State has a big game at Florida State.
