College Football 2017 Week 2 Recap | Saturday, 2017 September 16 - 9:56 am |
Michigan and N.C. State both win sloppily. Michigan 36, Cincinnati 14 There was a lot of grumbling about this game, but mostly due to a couple of Michigan fumbles and one long Cincinnati touchdown drive to open the second half. Excise those bits and you have a game that's more like 50-3... so, good? Watching live I was a bit terrified by some poor offensive line play, and by watching the defensive secondary get burned crispy by a variety of near-illegal-but-they-never-get-flagged pick plays by the Cinci WRs. These are fixable things to be sure, but it was a stark reminder of the two biggest holes in this Michigan team, holes that are sure to resurface from time to time as the season progresses. But a win is a win, and we'll just move on. N.C. State 37, Marshall 20 This game looked dicey for a half, before the State defense finally started to stiffen, and turnovers doomed the Thundering Herd's upset chances. State's gonna be their usual Cardiac Pack selves this year, I'm afraid; lots of talent and potential but never sustained consistency. State's first four drives were FG, punt, punt, punt. The next four? TD, TD, TD, TD. Notable Games #5 Oklahoma walloped #2 Ohio State 31-16. If you haven't seen Baker Mayfield play, you should; that dude is exciting. He'll be a first-round NFL quarterback. Meanwhile Ohio State's offense looked boring and barely competent, which suits me just fine. #3 Clemson beat #13 Auburn 14-6 in a defensive slugfest. #6 USC stomped #14 Stanford 42-24. I guess USC is good this year. #17 Louisville beat UNC 47-35. Louisville games will be fun to watch because they're almost certain to be high-scoring. #20 Georgia beat #24 Notre Dame 20-19. Nebraska lost to Oregon 42-35. Michigan State ground out a win against Western Michigan 28-14. The scoring limit in this game was 7 points per quarter, apparently. |
