Paddleboats are not designed to move through water. Yesterday we had a company picnic at Lake Johnson. We gorged ourselves on barbecue, took boats out on the water, and enjoyed the beautiful weather. I chose to take a paddleboat out on the lake, with a couple of other guys. Big mistake. A paddleboat is pretty much like an exercise bike, except it MOVES MUCH LESS. We were getting passed by water spiders. Canoes went by us as if they were speedboats. Crossing to the other side of the lake (which was maybe a couple hundred yards) took fifteen minutes. It would have been faster, and less strenuous, to pick up the boat and walk around the circumference of the lake to the other side. Of course, being engineers, we discussed how to improve the hydrodynamics of the boat, and the efficiency of the paddle. That somewhat took our minds off the fact that we'd been stupid enough to get in a paddleboat to begin with. Here's a clue about how poorly designed a paddleboat is: it moves better through the water backwards than it does forwards. At least we burned off all the calories from the barbecue. After all this, we were expected to return to work in the afternoon. I'd say about half of the company actually made it back. The other half went to, um, "work from home". Uh huh. |

Whaaaat? What kind of company picnic involves going back to work after lunch? That's a travesty, I tell you. A travesty! |
