Happy New Year's!
Sunday, 2006 January 1 - 1:38 pm
The Curse is broken.

Some of my longtime readers may remember the Curse. The Curse is that I haven't gotten a New Year's kiss at midnight for as long as I can remember. Either I'd be single, or I'd be with family instead of my girlfriend, or something else would transpire to prevent me from getting that kiss. It got to be a huge deal for me, and the New Year's holiday would fill me with anxiety. I mean, I loved New Year's Eve, and all the drinking and the celebrating and the good feelings. I just wanted to be able to share that moment with someone special.

This year Amy has broken the Curse. We watched the ball drop on TV together. (By the way, wasn't it sad to listen to Dick Clark slurring his words like that?) We kissed at the stroke of midnight, we drank champagne, and we said "HAPPY NEW YEAR!", and I finally got to participate fully in the event that everyone else seemed to relish so much. It was an emotional moment for me. And though I'm generally not superstitious, I have a feeling that it's significant that Amy was the one to break the curse.

We were at a bar. Well, actually we were at home. Really, it was both, because now we HAVE A BAR AT HOME. Get a load of this:

This sits in what was once my dining room. To put it in a little more perspective:

If there was any doubt that Amy and I were professional drinkers, now there's proof. We are thinking of calling our bar "Zoot's", but we've also cycled through many other names, mostly involving the words "monkey", "chicken", and "horizontal".

We invited Erik and Anna to be our first customers:

This bar is going to change our lives. Every bit of home furnishing we get for the next five years will be a bar accessory of some kind, I'm sure. Bar stools. Glasses. Mini-refrigerators. Ice makers. Fountain taps. Beer signs. The possibilities are endless.

Happy New Year, everyone. And thank you, Amy, for breaking the Curse.

Is the bow tie part of your bartender's costume?

BakeTown, thanks, and happy new year to you too.

Noelle, yeah, the tie was for a costume to celebrate the bar's opening night. :)

KEN! that's too cool...say, what are your hours? drink specials? when's dollar night? ladies night? Our next gift for your bar will be the requisite stripper pole! See you soon!!!

Awesome! About breaking the curse, I mean.

And very nice... about the bar.

Oddly, that's two friends in one year who have bought a bar. The other one (very similar to yours) was purchased by my pal who sold me my last car.
