Breaking Up Is... [Insert Cliche Here]
Saturday, 2004 May 29 - 1:35 pm
Most of us have been through this at some point. It's never easy.

I'm starting to wonder which is worse: being the dumper, or the dumped? I've had plenty of experience being dumped, and it's been no fun going through months of questioning my self-worth. But there have been a few occasions (including one recently) where I've been the one to call it quits, and that's caused me to question my judgment, my compassion, and my patience. Is it worse to be undesirable, or heartless?

In truth, all that self-doubt is (usually) unfounded. Most of us are good people, regardless of whether we're the windshield or the bug. Relationships sometimes just don't work; that doesn't mean someone has to be blamed for anything.

Still, it's hard not to feel bad. But feeling bad is part of the process, too, in a way. If breaking up didn't make us feel bad, we'd probably be more cavalier about it.
