Society: "Average Joe" has no chance
Wednesday, 2003 December 10 - 10:43 pm
Let's see... when a hot girl has to choose between a hot guy and an "Average Joe", who will she pick? Was there really ever any suspense in NBC's ridiculous show?

First, let's get something straight... I didn't watch NBC's "Average Joe" on a weekly basis. I admit to watching the first episode, but I didn't think I needed to watch the rest of the season, because the results were frankly quite predictable. Didn't we all know that hot-chick Melana would vote off the fat guys, the uber-geeks, and the token Indian? Didn't we all know that once the hunky guys came in, the other guys had no chance?

I wonder if NBC had some romantic notion that things would turn out the other way. Me, I consider myself a romantic, but I recognize the simple truth that most people feel a need to be physically attracted to their partners. I question the morality, though, of humiliating a dozen guys on national television to hammer that point home. The funny thing is that there isn't a chorus of outrage from the 95% of us average Joes out there. Perhaps we see ourselves as part of that hunky 5% (in someone's eyes), so we don't complain. It's the same mentality as not complaining about tax cuts for the wealthy, because one thinks one will be wealthy someday.

Here's hoping Fox doesn't come out with a clone of this show called "No Fat Chicks".
