A bit of 80s nostalgia, for those of you old enough to remember. Does anyone remember "DangerMouse"? It was a British cartoon that was shown in the U.S. on Nickelodeon back in the 1980s. DangerMouse was a secret agent mouse who lived in a red pillarbox in London, somewhere in Mayfair. Penfold was a hamster and was his sidekick. It was an odd little show. I mean, on its surface it was a goofy slapstick cartoon, but it was also a pretty darn clever parody of spy movies and television shows. So you might say it had something for all ages. In high school, Steve and I could hardly get enough of it. There was one quote we particularly enjoyed, though I'm not sure I remember it right. Penfold would ask DangerMouse how he was going to be able to accomplish something, and DangerMouse would answer, "Because I have the strength of ten men... ten LARGE men." That never failed to make us laugh. Sometimes I still use that quote, though very few people have any idea what I'm talking about. Sometimes I drew the DangerMouse "DM" logo on chalkboards in school, and it drove people crazy because they didn't know what it meant. I'm sure nowadays people would think it was some sort of gang insignia, but if you saw me in high school, there was no WAY you'd think I was a gang member. (Unless there was a gang for skinny geeks with bad haircuts.) I'd like to find the episodes on DVD, but that's pretty tough, especially on this side of the Atlantic. Someone is selling a collection on eBay for a hundred bucks... that might be a little bit steep just to satisfy a nostalgia kick. Oh well; perhaps this is one of those things that's best left preserved in fond memories. |

I LOVED me some danger mouse. The thing I remember loving about it was they way it admited to being a show (I remember one time they ran off the edge of the film). While we are on this kick... do you remember the spin-off series, Count Dukula. Those were the days. |

This may be after your time but do you remember Darkwing Duck? I really liked that show. |

Not to throw a monkey in your wrench, but the "...ten large men" line was actually from another show. Some superhero named Captain . For some reason I keep thinking there was something about a banana. I also remember an episode where there was something to do with firemen and for that episode he had "...the strength of ten firemen...ten LARGE firemen". Dangermouse's great skill was that he was a master of Kung-Mogi (or however it was spelled). |

I do remember the DM's on the boards. Those of us "in the know" always knew which classrooms you'd been in. |

Oh, darn, you're right. That "ten large men" was something else. But we did quote it to each other all the time. What the heck was it? |
