Hey China, Just Relax, Would You? | Monday, 2005 April 18 - 9:13 pm |
What's with all the anti-Japan rioting in China? Sometimes, countries act like junior-high-school kids. Apparently, China is angry at Japan, the way Joanie would be angry if she caught Chachi with another girl. There have been demonstrations in Beijing and Shanghai, with rocks being thrown at the Japanese embassy and vandalism against Japanese restaurants. Some Chinese are urging a boycott against Japanese businesses. And why? There are many reasons being floated around. Japan is trying to get a permanent seat on the U.N. Security Council, and China is worried about Japan's influence over Asian politics. Japan has plans to begin offshore drilling in a disputed area of the East China Sea. China believes Japan is interested in militarizing again, and that Japan would defend Taiwan in the event of a war. But mostly, China says that it boils down to this: Japan is not sorry enough about World War II. The fact that Japan recently decided to revise some of its textbooks to gloss over certain wartime atrocities (like the Nanjing Massacre) has aggravated this issue. Now, Japan made war reparations to China back in 1972, and has given China plenty of financial aid and investment capital since then... but they never offered a written apology. So China is mad. And now Japan is mad at China for not apologizing about the demonstrations. "You should be sorry. No, you should be sorrier than that. Why should I be sorry? You should apologize. No, you first. Okay, I'm never going to speak to you again, and you can just FORGET about going to the Sweetheart Dance." Geez. Maybe I'm biased here, but I think China is being just a little bit ridiculous. I mean, World War II was sixty years ago. Isn't it time to move on? Wait. What am I saying? Americans still distrust Germans. And Russians. And Mexicans. And the French... even though we've usually fought on the same side. (But the French didn't come to our Iraq party so they're KICKED OUT OF THE CLUB.) Countries are such poo-poo heads sometimes. |

Yeah, the Chinese government has no control of these "spontaneous" demonstrations. We know what they do at demonstrations they don't like. |
