Assbaggery | Thursday, 2005 September 8 - 11:11 pm |
GRRRRRR! Katrina insensitivity abounds. So by now, everyone's probably seen the assbag comment from Barbara Bush (the elder), talking about the Katrina evacuees holed up in the Astrodome. She said: "And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this is working very well for them." Because YEAH, it's GREAT to lose all your possessions and spend weeks not knowing how in the world you and your family were going to survive after this. I figure Babs would be universally reviled for this comment, but today I heard some people commenting about the $2000 debit cards that many of the evacuees in the Astrodome were receiving, and I nearly puked. Comment #1: "Hey, I'd be a refugee if I could get $2000." Okay, I'll take you up on that. First, we have to trash every possession that you own, and destroy your house. Second, you have to lose your job. Third, you and your family have to spend three days with no food, not knowing if you're going to survive through the week. Fourth, you have to live for a month in a stadium with 10,000 other people and no privacy. Fifth, you have to listen to a bunch of assbags telling you what a good life you've got going. For that, I'll give you $2000. Deal? Comment #2: "They should just give EVERYONE in the country $2000, to help offset these gas prices." Yeah, because having to spend an extra few bucks to fill up your suburban assault vehicle is EXACTLY like nearly dying in a hurricane. $3.29 for gas? CALL THE FREAKIN' NATIONAL GUARD. So it's quite possible that some people actually agree with Barbara. PUUUUUUKE. I just can't stand it. Here we have a tragedy on the scale of 9/11, and there are so many insensitive remarks being thrown around. Funny, two weeks after 9/11, I didn't hear people walking around saying, "Hey, I wish MY wife had been in the twin towers, so I could get a piece of that billion-dollar charity fund." But somehow comments like that NOW are okay. Is it because the victims are poor and black? Because death came in the form of a flood instead of an airplane? HOW IS THIS DIFFERENT? Grrrr. Grrrr. Grrrr. p.s. It's not too late to participate in the Katrina Aid Meme. All you have to do is mention my article in your blog, folks. I'm begging you, MAKE ME GIVE AWAY SOME MONEY. |
