Television: Idol Update, Week 1, Part 2
Thursday, 2006 February 23 - 8:45 am
Ranking the first week's performances. Part 2: The Men.

Chris Daughtry: 10/10.
Wow. Wow. A genuinely good rock voice, dead on key, powerful. He absolutely nailed it.

Taylor Hicks: 9/10.
You can tell, he's just such a good, honest person. Hey, he kinda looks like De Niro... it's the mouth thing that he does. Anyway, a great voice, and a unique style. A couple of sharp notes in there, barely noticeable.

Ace Young: 7/10.
Hey, I'll say it: this is a good-looking dude. Women will swoon. Not a bad singer, either; it's not a very hard song (George Michael), but he does it well. He's charismatic too.

Bucky Covington: 6/10.
Play some Skynyrd, man. A little too much like the singer from the local bar band (and Simon agrees with me here). Maybe too much growling. But a pretty good performance.

Gedeon McKinney: 5/10.
Not a very hard song. Kinda like a cruise ship performance. And he's just weird looking.

Will Makar: 4/10.
Is he Michael Jackson or Donny Osmond? Or as Paula says, Bobby Brady? Terrible clothes and not a very memorable voice either. A bit of high note trouble.

Elliott Yamin: 3/10.
Not an attractive man, in my opinion. Very pitchy start. Not very strong. He ain't no Stevie Wonder.

Patrick Hall: 3/10.
Absolutely the wrong song for him. Stiff, like a "hip preacher" trying to relate with the kids. He can't dance at all. Should stick to ballads.

David Radford: 3/10.
Too gimmicky; it's almost a parody. It's someone who's impersonating Harry Connick impersonating Elvis doing a Queen song. And not the best singing either.

Sway Penala. 2/10.
Uh, I'm not a big fan of the falsetto. Different, but weird and not very compelling. Bordering on dreadful. Randy and Paula liked it, but Simon hated it. (By the way, Sway IS Asian; he's Filipino. Geez, I shoulda realized that earlier.)

Bobby Bennett: 2/10.
Copacabana? This is really a cruise ship performance. Yawn. Pitchy, shticky, boring.

Kevin Covais: 1/10.
A nasal voice and no personality. Or rhythm. Brian McKnight? Ugh. This kid will get pity votes, but he needs to go.

Bobby is the first guy out. He's babbling a bit, poor guy. Ugh, he looks like he's on his way to the homeless shelter.

It's Patrick. Whew. No big loss.
