Wow, so much going on, and so little time to blog it all...

Universal health care in Massachusetts? That might become a reality, as the state is becoming ready to introduce a bold new plan to require all residents to carry health insurance. The state would pay premiums for those who couldn't afford it. For people that can afford health insurance, if they don't buy it, they'll be penalized on their taxes. (The theory is that people who voluntarily opt out of health insurance drive up costs by making more unnecessary emergency room visits.) Interesting. I'm sure a lot of other states, and the federal government, will be looking to see if this is a workable model.

Massachusetts' plan should help people more than prayer does. A recent study showed that prayer did not have any impact one way or another on the recovery of patients who underwent heart bypass surgery. I'm hoping that even the most religious people can see that things simply don't work that way. I mean, do people really believe that sitting around and wishing is gonna make things better? If there is power in prayer, I'm sure it doesn't work like an ATM, where you just stick your prayer card in and get your wishes shooting out of the dispenser.

Sketch pads in strip clubs are not "art", after all. A strip club owner in Boise, Idaho gained attention last year when he attempted to circumvent the city's restriction on fully-nude performers. Since the city grants an exemption for works of artistic merit, he distributed sketch pads to his clients so they could draw the nude dancers and claim it was "art". But he recently pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of violating the ordinance, effectively negating his claim.

The weird thing is that a sculpture of Britney giving birth while clutching a bear's head is still considered "art". If anything should be outlawed, it's THIS:

She's on a bear skinned rug! (I might go gawk at it.)

That Massachusetts thing is quite incredible. Most states mandate automobile liability insurance, but not health insurance! (Disclaimer: I haven't read the particulars about it yet.)
