Gaah, I hate politics sometimes. That's why I have to write about it, I guess. Jeb Bush has finally given up on the Terri Schiavo case. After prosecutors told him there was no indication of foul play by her husband Michael Schiavo, Jeb Bush indicated that the investigation against Michael would be stopped. My fear is that this isn't really over. There will always be some new conspiracy theory. The supports of the Schindlers have turned into total wack jobs; before long they'll claim that Terri is actually still alive and working at a Burger King in Kalamazoo. Or, they'll say that some stain on a concrete wall is miraculously depicting Terri's image, demonstrating God's anger at Michael. But at least one more chapter has been closed. Congress is reportedly planning to reinstate funds dedicated towards shoring up the security of mass transit systems. Earlier, a Senate committee had voted to slash $50 million from mass transit security, from its original level annual of $150 million, in an attempt to curb federal spending. After the London bombings, though, Senators are beating a hasty retreat from that plan. Politics... sigh. Meanwhile, we spend about $100 billion annually on the war in Iraq. So I guess being on "offense" makes us A THOUSAND TIMES SAFER than being on "defense". Rumors abound that Rehnquist will be announcing his retirement from the Supreme Court shortly. But you know, I hope that happens well after a replacement for O'Connor is named, because I don't want to see Dubya trying to push some conservative ideologue onto the court as part of a "package deal". |
