Bill Introduced to Raise Gas Mileage | Thursday, 2005 September 15 - 8:18 am |
Um, wow! There are Republicans interested in higher mileage for cars. This surprised me. A bipartisan group of House legislators introduced a bill that would require automakers to raise the average gas mileage of U.S. cars from 25 MPG to 33 MPG over the next decade. It's the bipartisan aspect that surprised me. Republicans have long resisted this kind of thing. But the recent run-up in gas prices in the wake of Hurricane Katrina has probably alarmed a lot of people, so maybe it's the right time for this sort of thing. Republican congressman Sherwood Boehlert also noted that this will strengthen national security by reducing dependence on foreign oil. "This bill, more so than any provision in the recently-enacted energy bill, will lessen that dependence." Uh, yeah. Isn't that what some of us (Democrats, cough) have been saying for a long time? Hopefully this bill will pass, so we won't have to make fuel from dead cats. A German inventor was reported to have come up with a way of making diesel fuel from various waste products. This prompted the German newspaper Bild to report, "German inventor can turn cats into fuel -- for a tank he needs 20 cats." It turns out this was just speculation on the part of the newspaper; the inventor denies that he ever used dead cats, or even suggested using them. But the story did prompt some awfully funny (and twisted) jokes over in Dave Barry's blog. My favorite comment, from LadyBug: "Y'know, you can't swing a dead cat these days without hitting someone who's trying to come up with cheaper fuel alternatives." Anyway. Here's to higher gas mileage. Go, Congress, go. |
