The Golden Opportunity
Thursday, 2005 September 22 - 11:58 pm
An opportunity like this may not come again for the Democrats.

Listen up, Democrats. Bush's approval rating is plummeting. Republican congressmen are scrambling to distance themselves from the bungled Katrina efforts, high oil prices, and the Iraq war... while also trying not to look like they're stabbing Bush in the back. Bush's legislative agenda is in peril. DEMOCRATS, THIS IS YOUR CHANCE.

I'm wondering if the Democratic Party has the political savvy to take advantage of all this. If the situation were reversed, I know that the Republican political machine would be churning out waves of talking points, and that every Republican would be dutifully spouting off sound bites on as many news outlets as possible. Can the Democrats do likewise, and finally put out a message that resonates with people?

Here would be my talking points for the Democratic Party:
  • Democrats stand for a government that helps people in need... people like the victims of Hurricane Katrina. (Just as Republicans keep referring to 9/11, Democrats should keep referring to Katrina.)
  • Democrats' priorities are American people first, foreign wars second. We won't bankrupt our country in an overseas quagmire, leaving us without the resources to help our own citizens.
  • Democrats believe in everyone contributing, to the best of their ability. That's why we don't give luxurious tax breaks to the wealthiest individuals in our country, at the very time the poorest individuals need our help.
  • George Bush hates black people*.
And no, not all of those statements are entirely fair. But if Democrats can just stay on message, it will be the Republicans who have to dicker over nuances.

13 months until the 2006 elections. Democrats, please: STAY ON TARGET. STAY ON TARGET.

"everyone contributing, to the best of their ability"

I would be careful with that one. I mean... I agree with it, but it sound a bit too much like "from each according to their ability, to each according to their need" and I alreay hear WAY too many Democrat=communist jokes.
