Apple Speed-Bumps Macbook Pros
Monday, 2011 October 24 - 11:03 pm
Apple introduced "new" Macbook Pro models today, though the changes are so minor you might wonder why they bothered. Essentially all the models got a slight speed and storage bump but otherwise the specs are unchanged. I wonder what's next for the Mac line as a whole; Apple seems to be treating the product category as mature and not in need of major improvements. Given the post-PC era they're clearly promoting, maybe we've already seen the last of splashy new Mac models.

College Football Week 8 Games to Watch
Saturday, 2011 October 22 - 11:02 am
Sorry, I know I'm late with this week's installment. Michigan is idle this week; N.C. State plays Virginia.

Games to Watch on Saturday

At noon, your best bet looks to be UNC vs. #7 Clemson on ESPN. #23 Illinois plays Purdue on ESPN2, and it wouldn't surprise me at all to see an upset here. The rest of the early games are kind of yawners.

At 3:30 PM, the N.C. State game against Virginia is on ESPNU. #1 LSU plays #20 Auburn in a big SEC game on CBS, though Auburn is struggling a bit and LSU has looked dominant. #22 Georgia Tech plays Miami (FL) on ESPN.

At 7:00, #21 Penn State plays Northwestern on BTN in an intriguing matchup... Penn State's defense has looked very good but the offense has looked terrible, and with NWU it's largely the other way around. At 7:30 USC plays Notre Dame on NBC; that game is always entertaining.

At 8:00 this week's Game of the Week is on ESPN with #6 Wisconsin taking on #16 Unnecessary Roughness University... er, Michigan State, that is. MSU's defensive end William Gholston is suspended for this game due to his dirty play against Michigan, so Wisconsin benefits from Michigan's misfortune, whee. #25 Washington is having a surprisingly good year; they play #8 Stanford on ABC.

N.C. State Game Prediction: Virginia's a hard team to figure out; they've squeaked by with narrow wins against awful teams (overtime against 1-6 Idaho? WTF?) but then last week they found a way to beat Georgia Tech. They've racked up plenty of yards on opponents only to squander the scoring opportunities. Will those mistakes continue against N.C. State? Signs point to yes. I like the Wolfpack in a mild upset and a high-scoring game: N.C. State 42, Virginia 37.

College Football Week 7 Games to Watch
Saturday, 2011 October 15 - 3:21 am
Michigan has a big game against Michigan State; N.C. State is idle.

Games to Watch on Saturday

At noon, obviously the UM-MSU game is the game to watch, and this week's Game of the Week; it's on ESPN. #11 Michigan is 6-0 and #23 Michigan State is 4-1; this game is crucial in the Big Ten Legends division, and it's the last chance for Michigan's seniors to get a win against the Spartans. Oh sure, you could watch #20 Baylor play #21 Texas A&M on FX, but you won't unless you live in Texas. There are several other games involving teams who have something to prove: Penn State playing Purdue on BTN, North Carolina playing Miami FL on ESPN3.com (WRAL locally), and #15 South Carolina playing Mississippi State on the SEC Network (WNCN's alternate feed, if you get it). Oh, ESPN2 has Indiana against Wisconsin; the only question in that game is whether Wisconsin will score more than 70.

At 3:00 Florida State plays Duke on ESPN3.com. Heather Dinich at ESPN called this one an upset win for Duke, but I doubt it. At 3:30, your best bet is probably #6 Oklahoma State against #22 Texas on ABC/ESPN, an important Big 12 game. #1 LSU plays Tennessee on CBS, but Tennessee football just isn't very exciting these days. Ohio State plays #16 Illinois on ABC/ESPN; Ohio State is suffering badly lately but this one might be stay pretty close, as I'm sure Ron Zook will find a way to screw things up.

6:30 brings us Virginia Tech vs. Wake Forest on ESPN3.com. This should be an interesting game; I think Wake Forest is for real this year, and VT is vulnerable. Florida plays #24 Auburn on ESPN at 7:00; Northwestern plays Iowa on BTN.

ABC is choosing to air NASCAR instead of football in primetime, so the evening matchups are not spectacular. If you wait until 10:15, you can watch #9 Oregon playing #18 Arizona State on ESPN in a key Pac-12 game.

Michigan Game Prediction: Michigan 24, Michigan State 17. This game is extremely hard to predict, but this game always comes down to rushing, and Michigan has the edge in that department this year. I think Denard Robinson will be careful to avoid interceptions, that MSU will have trouble establishing a running game, and the Michigan defense will get two sacks and two interceptions. I also think Kirk Cousins will pass for over 250 yards, with over 100 going to B.J. Cunningham. But in the end, barring major mistakes, Michigan should be able to churn out a victory. Some may point to MSU's highly-rated defense, but that defense has racked up statistics against inferior competition to date. MSU may be the best defense Michigan has faced, but Michigan is the best offense MSU has faced too. It'll be a great matchup.

College Football Week 6 Games to Watch
Friday, 2011 October 7 - 10:16 pm
Michigan plays another night game; N.C. State tries to regain its footing against Central Michigan.

Games to watch on Saturday

At noon, we start right off with this week's Game of the Week, as #3 Oklahoma takes on #11 Texas on ABC. I'm not sold on Texas yet, but maybe they'll keep this one close for a while. At least I hope so, because there aren't many other compelling matchups at noon... the Minnesota-Purdue kitten fight on ESPN? Florida State vs. Wake Forest on ESPN3.com? Eh.

At 3:30 N.C. State plays Central Michigan on ESPN3.com. We get #17 Florida against #1 LSU on CBS... this game doesn't quite have the luster it once had. Miami FL takes on #21 Virginia Tech in the race to avoid going 0-2 in the ACC; that's on ABC/ESPN. Iowa plays Penn State on ABC/ESPN; that might be one to keep an eye on as both teams are struggling to prove their legitimacy.

At 7:00 #12 Michigan travels to Northwestern; that game is on BTN. #10 Arkansas plays #15 Auburn on ESPN; I feel like I should care about that game but I kinda don't.

At 8:00 Ohio State plays #14 Nebraska on ABC. A few months ago most probably thought this would be the game of the year; now we'll see if Ohio State's pathetic offense can score any points at all against Nebraska's recently-exposed defense. Nebraska, it would not hurt my feelings if you stomped Ohio State into the dirt. Just sayin'.

Michigan Game Prediction: Michigan 44, Northwestern 27. I think Northwestern gets a few big plays but they don't have the horses to keep Michigan's running game in check.

N.C. State Game Prediction: N.C. State 27, Central Michigan 10. This game features the #101 rushing offense vs. the #103 rushing offense, but I think State's defense picks up a score off a turnover. I'm not confident at all about this prediction, what with State's inconsistency, but Central Michigan is a pretty terrible team too.

Restaurant Review: Chuck's
Tuesday, 2011 October 4 - 11:26 pm
Chuck's is one of the newest ventures from acclaimed local chef Ashely Christensen. It features a variety of novel high-end burgers, like "The High and the Valley" with crushed avocado, bacon-onion jam, and blistered red peppers. As a burger aficionado, I was looking forward to the experience.

The restaurant is pretty; it has a retro diner feel to it, with bright red chairs and black tables. You order at the counter and someone brings your food out to you. Unfortunately the initial impression I got from the order-takers was not positive: there was no welcome greeting, only a haughty stare as they waited for me to pick what I wanted. And when I did give my order, there was no acknowledgement or follow-up. I'd expect some basic prompts like "which dipping sauce would you like for your fries?" or "what would you like to drink with your lunch today?", but no, it was just click on the register and then a bunch of glaring. It was off-putting.

As for the food itself, I was severely disappointed. The burger is very finely ground, not quite to paté consistency but certainly more meatloaf-like than burger-like. It had been pressed into a round mold instead of hand-formed. And then the burger came out with no char or sear, as if it had been cooked at far too low a temperature. It seemed almost steamed instead of grilled. And it was severely under-seasoned to boot.

I've heard of others who have had a better experience with the burger quality, but when you're paying $9 for a burger (without fries), it had better be awesome every time. I've also heard of horrific customer service experiences, like diners getting charged for poorly-cooked burgers that they tried to send back. And it is too much to ask to get a properly-sized glass of water, instead of these little four-ounce thimbles that they grudgingly allow you to serve yourself? (Oh, and the sodas are outrageously priced eight-ounce bottles.)

I'm a big fan of Ashley Christensen and the things she's trying to bring to Raleigh. But I can easily think of a dozen places around here that have better burgers and better service at a lower price, including national chains like Ruby Tuesday, Chili's and Applebee's. And that should be embarrassing to a good chef.

I'm hoping they can chalk up the problems to inexperienced staff rather than design, but I'll have to hear a lot of good things about the place before I go back again.

Apple Introduces the iPhone 4S
Tuesday, 2011 October 4 - 11:02 pm
Apple CEO Tim Cook took the stage along to introduce the newest iPhone, dubbed the "iPhone 4S". The important new specs: a significantly faster A5 dual-core processor; an 8 megapixel camera with improved sensor and optics (f2.4 aperture!); HD video recording; Siri voice-recognition assistant; dual-mode CDMA and GSM radio; and availability on Sprint as well as AT&T and Verizon.

There seems to be widespread disappointment that Apple didn't announce a radically new iPhone 5. I'm not sure I understand this. Perhaps if Apple had called it an iPhone 5 and given it a new case design, people would have been happier?

I mean honestly, exactly what features do people believe are missing? I guess some people were hoping for a bigger screen, but the cost of that would have been lower pixel density, application compatibility issues, increased power consumption, poorer display quality, or some combination of those factors. LTE? I'd rather not sacrifice the battery life for a network with limited coverage and availability. I personally would have liked to have seen a near-field radio chip, but I can see that the infrastructure isn't there to support it yet. So really, what's missing?

It's an incremental improvement on an already-great phone. It has a best-in-class camera, display, processor, graphics chip, operating system, and application ecosystem. Oh, and there's Siri, which looks like something straight out of a science fiction movie. And still people complain.

The most ridiculous complaints come from people who own the iPhone 4, saying "it's not worth the upgrade". Well you know, most iPhone 4 owners aren't eligible for the carrier-subsidized price yet anyway. No, the 4S is mainly targeted at people like me, who have the 3GS and have been waiting for this upgrade opportunity, or for first-time iPhone buyers who would have bought the 4 this summer if not for the pending upgrade. There's a big pent-up demand, and the iPhone 4S is just what we were waiting for.

I'll be pre-ordering two on Friday.

College Football Week 5 Games to Watch
Saturday, 2011 October 1 - 12:25 am
Games to watch on Saturday

#19 Michigan takes on Minnesota at noon on BTN to open its Big Ten season. Minnesota is having a disastrous season so this might get ugly for them quickly. A more intriguing game is #24 Illinois vs. Northwestern on ESPN2. Dan Persa is set to return at quarterback for Northwestern, and Illinois might have a battle on its hands. #14 Texas A&M also plays #18 Arkansas in a game which will have some regional interest; that's on ESPN.

The games get more interesting at 3:30. Ohio State plays Michigan State on ABC/ESPN, in the game of "which offense can implode first". The alternate regional game on ABC/ESPN is N.C. State against Georgia Tech... of course there'll be plenty of people around here watching that one. Auburn plays #10 South Carolina on CBS; Arizona plays USC but I don't know where that'll be televised.

At 6:00 there'll be a very important ACC game as #11 Virginia Tech plays #13 Clemson, on ESPN2.

The prime time games include #3 Alabama vs #12 Florida on CBS. And this week's Game of the Week is #7 Wisconsin against #8 Nebraska on ABC, which features Russell Wilson having a dazzling season vs. the Nebraska defense, which is largely healthy for the first time this season.

Michigan Game Prediction: Michigan 48, Minnesota 10. Some are predicting that Minnesota's defense can keep this game competitive, but I'm not buying it. Michigan might rush for 500 yards and never have to put up a pass against Minnesota's woeful front seven.

N.C. State Game Prediction: Georgia Tech 38, N.C. State 20. I think Tech's defense is too much for N.C. State; meanwhile N.C. State's patchwork defense will have trouble keeping Tech out of the end zone.

College Football Week 4 Games to Watch
Friday, 2011 September 23 - 6:23 pm
Well, N.C. State already played Thursday and got clobbered by Cincinnati. I was all ready to predict a two-touchdown loss for State; I didn't think they'd lose by 30. State's problems are many; I'll discuss them in the recap in a couple of days.

Games to watch on Saturday

At noon, #22 Michigan plays Brady Hoke's former team, San Diego State, on the Big Ten Network. It could actually be a pretty tight game, but for the sake of my blood pressure, let's hope not. ESPN has two unbeaten ACC teams as North Carolina takes on Georgia Tech. Notre Dame will be looking to continue its redemption process against Pitt on NBC.

At 3:30 there are two veritable blockbusters. This week's Game of the Week is #3 Alabama against #14 Arkansas on CBS; there's also #7 Oklahoma State against #8 Texas A&M on ABC or ESPN2. The matchup on ESPN, #11 Florida State against #21 Clemson, also figures to be a good game (and an important one in the ACC). Ohio State plays Colorado on ABC or ESPN2, and that's no gimme for the reeling Buckeyes.

The big night game is #2 LSU against #16 West Virginia on ABC. LSU is pretty stout and WVU is probably overrated; but I like this game because I want WVU to get a reality check. There's also Missouri vs. #1 Oklahoma on FX; OU is a 22-point favorite, but I wouldn't count out Missouri here.

There are two entertaining night games out of the Pac-12 at 10:15: #10 Oregon plays Arizona on ESPN2, and #23 USC takes on Arizona State on ESPN.

Michigan game prediction: Michigan 34, San Diego State 21. I think SDSU will start quickly and grab the lead at some point in the first half, but Michigan's second-half adjustments this year have been stellar. Expect a heavy dose of Denard Robinson zone read plays right from the get-go.

College Football Week 3 Games to Watch
Saturday, 2011 September 17 - 10:29 am
There's a bit of a sideshow happening today as Pitt and Syracuse have reportedly applied to leave the Big East and join the ACC.

Games to watch on Saturday

Michigan takes on Eastern Michigan at noon on the Big Ten Network. That will be of no interest to anyone except Michigan fans (and EMU fans, I suppose), so most of you instead will want to catch Auburn vs. Clemson on ABC. Clemson struggled in a couple of games that should have been blowouts, and they'll be trying to uphold the reputation of the ACC. Another interesting game is Pitt vs. Iowa on ESPN2; Iowa is coming off a loss to Iowa State last week and needs a win against Pitt to right the ship.

At 3:30 there are a slew of good games to choose from. Michigan State plays Notre Dame on NBC; could Notre Dame go 0-3 to start the year? Tennessee plays Florida on CBS; ABC/ESPN regional coverage gives you Texas vs. UCLA or Washington vs. Nebraska.

N.C. State plays South Alabama at 6:00; this game is on ESPN3.com.

Illinois plays Arizona State at 7:00 on the Big Ten Network; that will show us if Illinois is for real, or if this is another Ron Zook womp womp year.

The two blockbuster matchups are both at night: at 7:30 on ESPN we get Ohio State against Miami in what's being called the "Ineligi-bowl", and at 8:00 we get this week's Game of the Week, #1 Oklahoma vs. #5 Florida State on ABC.

Your nightcap game is Stanford against Arizona on ESPN at 10:45.

Michigan game prediction: Michigan 40, Eastern Michigan 13. Should be a cakewalk. It had better be a cakewalk.

N.C. State game prediction: N.C. State 38, South Alabama 10. Hopefully this is the week State gets its act together.

College Football Recap: Week 2
Sunday, 2011 September 11 - 12:36 pm
Wow. This will long be remembered as one of Michigan's greatest victories. Michigan rallied from a 17-point deficit entering the third quarter to pull out a victory over Notre Dame with two seconds left on the clock. Meanwhile N.C. State fell to Wake Forest, as I feared.

College Football Week 2 Games to Watch
Friday, 2011 September 9 - 8:22 pm
Games to watch on Saturday

At noon, the best game figures to be Mississippi State against Auburn on the SEC Network or ESPN3.com, though the appeal of that game is mostly limited to the southeast. Speaking of limited appeal, Iowa plays Iowa State in the I Eat Corn Bowl; the game is not televised nationally at all, which should tell you something. There isn't much of interest otherwise; maybe you can see if Toledo can keep it close against Ohio State on the Big Ten Network, or see if Rutgers can upset North Carolina on ESPN3.com.

At 3:30, Penn State looks to avenge last year's beatdown from Alabama, on ABC. North Carolina State takes on Wake Forest in what will be an important test for the Wolfpack; that game is on ESPN3.com. Nevada against Oregon on FX is an intriguing matchup; Nevada went 13-1 last year and though they lost their starting quarterback, the new guy is a fifth-year senior. Meanwhile Oregon is looking to prove something after last week's loss to LSU.

At 7:00 it might be interesting to catch a little bit of BYU against Texas, on ESPN2. But of course at 8:00, you'll flip over to this week's Game of the Week, which just happens to be Michigan against Notre Dame. No, neither team is ranked, but this is just a fascinating matchup, and it's Michigan's first home night game. Also, Brian Kelly's head may explode.

Michigan game prediction: Michigan 31, Notre Dame 24. Before last week I would have picked Notre Dame here, but Michigan looks better than I thought, and Notre Dame looks worse.

N.C. State game prediction: N.C. State 30, Wake Forest 34. I'm a bit down on State this week after watching their poor week 1 performance; meanwhile Wake Forest picked up 326 yards passing last week in an overtime loss to Syracuse. Uh oh.

Republican Debate!
Wednesday, 2011 September 7 - 11:15 pm
Oh, how entertaining tonight's debate was. Remember back in 2003 when I first started blogging? One of my earliest posts was about the Democratic primary race. Yes, I was young and naïve then.

Highlight: Herman Cain laying out his crazy "9-9-9" tax plan, which no one else believes will work, twice.

Disappointment: No one else asked to comment on the crazy "9-9-9" tax plan.

Highlight: Rick Perry defending himself in the position that most scientists don't agree with 98% of scientists, when it comes to climate change.

Disappointment: Rick Perry not pressed after avoiding the question of exactly which scientific evidence contradicts climate change theory.

Highlight: Ron Paul acting and looking like a crazy libertarian Gandalf.

Disappointment: No one else asked about the issue of legalization of marijuana.

Highlight: Touching tribute to Ronald and Nancy Reagan.

Disappointment: No one asked about the issue of stem cell research, which Nancy strongly supports.

Highlight: Jon Huntsman looking like only the reasonable intelligent guy in the group.

Disappointment: Jon Huntsman looking like he has no chance in hell of winning the primary.

Highlight: Michelle Bachmann's hair. Was she going for the Darth Vader helmet, the Geico caveman, or Ari from Planet of the Apes?

Disappointment: Michelle not really given much of a chance to speak. No really, I was looking for her to say something super crazy, but Ron Paul stole that show.

College Football Week 1 Games to Watch
Friday, 2011 September 2 - 3:40 pm
FOOTBAWW! College football returns, at last. It has been a long summer of anticipation.

A few games are already on the books. Wisconsin romped over UNLV yesterday, 51-17. Wisconsin will be a tough team to stop this year, with N.C. State transfer Russell Wilson at the helm.

Games to watch on Saturday

At noon, turn on Northwestern vs. Boston College on ESPNU, which should be competitive. Northwestern quarterback Dan Persa may be out with a bum Achilles tendon, though. During breaks, flip over to the Ohio State/Akron game on ESPN to see how the Buckeyes are doing with a new coach and a new quarterback. After 12:30, keep an eye on the ticker for the Virginia Tech vs. Appalachian State score; as we all know too well, App St. is capable of some surprises.

At 3:30, of course I'll be watching Michigan vs. Western Michigan on ABC/ESPN2. If you're not a Michigan fan, the Notre Dame vs. South Florida matchup on NBC might be interesting. Skip Holtz, the USF coach, is a Notre Dame grad and the son of former ND coach Lou Holtz. Also keep an eye on Minnesota vs. USC on ABC/ESPN2, where new Minnesota coach Jerry Kill will be looking to make a splash by scoring a big upset.

At 6:00, N.C. State opens against Liberty; this one is only available on ESPN3.com. Not to worry, though... this game will likely be a yawner.

Take a break between 7:00 and 8:00, because after 8:00 you'll be hunkered down watching this week's Game of the Week: #3 Oregon against #4 LSU on ABC. I think LSU is probably overrated this year, but this is a huge early game for both teams nonetheless. During breaks, flip over to ESPN to watch the only other game between ranked teams this week, as Boise State takes on Georgia.

Your late-night dessert is Colorado vs. Hawaii on ESPN at 10:15. Hawaii is always an entertaining team to watch. They're favored by 11 over Colorado, who is breaking in new coach Jon Embree.

Michigan game prediction: Michigan 38, Western Michigan 20.

N.C. State game prediction: N.C. State 48, Liberty 13.

The End of the Space Shuttle Era
Thursday, 2011 July 28 - 8:42 pm
When I was 11 years old, I was utterly fascinated by everything to do with outer space. I'd grown up reading books about the Apollo moon missions, books about quasars, and anything else space-related I could get my hands on.

When I heard that the U.S. was building a highly advanced reusable spacecraft, a ship like nothing we'd ever seen before, my mind was blown. A spaceship with wings? That could fly back to earth and then be used again? It was like science fiction.

New Mac mini, MacBook Air
Tuesday, 2011 July 26 - 8:52 pm
Here's what's new.

Mac mini

Now starting at $100 cheaper ($599), the new Mac mini no longer has a built-in optical drive; instead, you can add an external $79 USB SuperDrive.

The CPU is now a 2.3 GHz Core i5 instead of a 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo; this is a big speed increase. The graphics are Intel HD 3000 instead of an Nvidia GeForce 320M; pretty much a wash. A Thunderbolt port replaces the Mini DisplayPort. It still has 2GB of RAM; memory is slightly faster at 1333 MHz, and there's an SDXC slot instead of a standard SD card slot.

Instead of a $999 Server model, there's now an $799 model (with Lion Server available as a $49 download). Hardware-wise, it has a 2.5 GHz Core i5, up from a previous 2.66 GHz Core 2 Duo. It has just a single 500 GB drive instead of the two that the previous server had; it has an AMD Radeon HD 6630M GPU, which is a significant bump.

In all, this is a big performance boost for less money than before. It's a nice improvement.

MacBook Air

The Air models are largely the same as before, except they have an Intel Core i5 instead of a Core 2 Duo. All the models use the Intel HD 3000 instead of an Nvidia GeForce 320M, and they have a Thunderbolt port to replace the Mini DisplayPort. So, this is mostly a CPU speed bump with the move to the Sandy Bridge architecture. The price lineup is unchanged.

All the new computers have Mac OS X Lion. Interestingly, these models support re-installation of the OS over the Internet, even if the hard drive has to be replaced; apparently there's Internet network boot code built into the firmware. Nice.

Current Events
Sunday, 2011 July 24 - 8:41 pm
Geez, I go away for a while, and all sorts of stuff happens. (I took my cousin Kaitlyn to audition for American Idol. More on that in a future post.)

Amy Winehouse was found dead at the age of 27. She was a terribly troubled person, but for the brief time she had it together, she put out some amazing music. It's just a shame.

The federal debt crisis is still unresolved, causing many to worry that the stock market will plummet this week. Me, I'm debating whether I should sell every stock that I own (and prepare to buy back in if/when the crisis is resolved). It's hard to know where to put money, though: precious metals are already overbought, and of course U.S. bonds are definitely out. Foreign bonds, maybe?

Apple released new models of the Macbook Air and the Mac mini. I'll have a brief summary of the new models in a separate post. Or I suppose you can just look it up elsewhere.

The Space Shuttle completed its final mission Thursday. As my Facebook friends know, my mom found the original drawing I did for the first Columbia launch in 1981, when I was 11 years old. Again, I'll have a separate post about that.

Anyway, I know, long time no blog. I'll try to catch up shortly.

Osama Bin Laden
Thursday, 2011 May 5 - 1:01 pm
It's been four days since the big news that a U.S. Navy Seal team had entered Pakistan and killed Osama Bin Laden, in the mansion in which he'd been hiding. Unless you've been living in a cave (ha!), you have probably spent these last four days thinking and talking about the event.

By and large, Americans have been celebrating. In Washington D.C. and New York City, crowds gathered outside and celebrated all through Sunday night. Both Democratic and Republican politicians have hailed this as a great achievement for the country.

But then there are the critics. There are always critics. In this case, there are criticisms from both the liberal and the conservative side, and I wanted to take the chance to talk about a few of them.

The Japan Disaster
Sunday, 2011 March 20 - 10:05 pm
Well, the Japan earthquake is already week-old news and I haven't said anything about it, but better late than never.

First, I'm tremendously appreciative of the outpouring of support, not just from my friends but from celebrities and governments around the world. Sandra Bullock gave a million dollars to the relief effort. Ichiro Suzuki pledged $100 million yen (about a million dollars) as well. CBS has been advertising for the Red Cross relief effort during the NCAA tournament games (text REDCROSS to 90999 to donate $10 from your phone).

Of course, Fifty Cent and Gilbert Gottfried represent the ugly side of all of this. There seems to be some pent-up anti-Japanese or anti-Asian sentiment among some people... Sweat Pants Mom has the definitive word on that subject.

But the main thing I've felt during this crisis is pride: pride in my culture and in my people, who are the most stoic and resilient in the world. The Japanese are unique in their ability to persevere through adversity, with the spirit of gaman that gives them the strength to endure trying times without complaining. There is no rioting or looting in the quake- and tsunami-ravaged cities; only stories of Japanese people patiently waiting in hours-long lines for food or gasoline, and sharing what rice or noodles they have to everyone they can. It's a marvel of human spirit. Here in the U.S., we complain about lines for the iPad 2.

There are still worries about Japan's ability to get their damaged nuclear reactors under control. I can tell you this: there are Japanese workers who would willingly sacrifice their own lives to prevent a nuclear catastrophe. They will get those reactors under control. They will rebuild the cities that have been destroyed. If there is one country that can survive a disaster, it is Japan.

There have been times in my life when I was ashamed of my background. When you're taunted throughout your childhood for being different, it's hard to be proud of it. But throughout this last week, I could not be more proud to call myself Japanese.

Apple Watch: iPad 2
Thursday, 2011 March 3 - 9:28 pm
The iPad 2 was announced yesterday; it will be available March 11 at the same price points as the original iPad.

The new version sports a dual-core A5 processor (twice as fast as the A4, with nine times faster graphics), front and rear cameras, and a gyroscope (for better gaming control). It's 33% thinner and 15% lighter. It still boasts a 10-hour battery.

It's now available in both black and white, and can use AT&T or Verizon's data network natively. There's a clever magnetically-attached cover option. And you can attach an HDMI adapter to mirror the display to an HDTV.

All in all, it's a decent update and it raises the bar for all the copycats. We'll be getting a new one for Amy; I'll inherit her first-gen model.

Oh yeah, Steve Jobs was there to make the announcement. Rumors of his death have been greatly exaggerated.

Apple Watch: New MacBook Pro Lineup Today
Thursday, 2011 February 24 - 12:56 pm
... as expected.

The skinny:

All Models
  • "Thunderbolt" connector. This is the copper version of Intel's "Light Peak" technology; it's a single 10GB connection that will eventually replace USB, FireWire, SATA, and HDMI. The connector is physically identical to Apple's Mini-DisplayPort connector (and it's backward compatible), so you can already use it to connect displays.
  • High definition FaceTime camera (webcam). I'm not sure what that will do to upstream bandwidth requirements; I expect most users won't be able to take advantage of the full resolution.

13" MacBook Pro:
  • Prices unchanged at $1199/$1499
  • CPU changed from 2.40/2.66 GHz dual-core Core2 Duo to a 2.3 GHz dual-core Core i5 or 2.7GHz dual-core Corei7. That's a fairly significant improvement.
  • Standard RAM is unchanged at 4GB on all models.
  • Standard hard drive lineup up from 250/320 GB to 320/500 GB.
  • GPU is now the Intel HD Graphics 3000 instead of the NVidia GeForce 320M; this is a wash at best, perhaps even a slight downgrade
  • Battery life down from 10 hours to 7 hours

15" MacBook Pro:
  • Prices unchanged at the low and high end at $1799/$2199 (no more $1999 model)
  • CPU options now 2.0/2.2 GHz quad-core Core i7, instead of 2.4/2.53 GHz dual-core Core i5 or 2.66GHz dual-core Core i7
  • Standard hard drive lineup up from 250/500 GB to 500/750 GB
  • GPU is now Intel HD Graphics 3000 + AMD Radeon HD 6490M, instead of Intel HD + NVidia GeForce GT 330M; pretty much a wash
  • Battery life down from 8-9 hours to 7 hours

17" MacBook Pro:
  • Prices up from $2299 to $2499
  • CPU options now 2.2/2.3GHz quad-core Core i7, instead of 2.53/2.66 GHz dual-core Core i7
  • Standard hard drive up from 500 GB to 750 GB
  • GPU is now Intel HD Graphics 3000 + AMD Radeon HD 6750M, instead of Intel HD + NVidia GeForce GT 330M; this is an improvement
  • Battery life down from 8-9 hours to 7 hours

All in all, Apple sacrificed a few things (battery life in particular) to bump the CPU performance. These will be screaming fast machines. There's no small SSD for the OS as was rumored, and everything has retained roughly the same form factor (including the optical drive).

Apple Watch: New MacBook Pros, iPads Coming
Wednesday, 2011 February 23 - 4:57 pm
It's being widely reported that there will be a new MacBook Pro lineup tomorrow. A German site has posted what may be the tech specs for the 13" model. Key stats: Intel Core i5 CPU at 2.3 GHz, "Sandy Bridge" chipset with Intel HD3000 graphics, and a new "Thunderbolt" connector (which is Apple's name for the copper version of what Intel calls Light Peak... it's a high-speed interface for peripherals that may eventually replace USB, Firewire, SATA, and HDMI). The new connector would only make sense if there are peripherals designed to connect to it, so keep an eye out for a new Apple Display, or perhaps external hard drive options from third-party manufacturers.

An earlier report suggested that some of the MacBook Pro models may incorporate a small (8-16 GB) SSD designed to store the operating system installation only; this would allow for fast bootup times but still allow for larger and less expensive conventional hard drives. It seems plausible but there's no hard evidence for this yet. There were also reports that the optical drive might be removed, a la the MacBook Air. This seems unlikely.

Meanwhile, Apple has a media event scheduled for March 2; it's quite obvious that this will be an iPad 2 introduction.

There's also a rumor that Apple has scheduled a secret all-employees meeting for Sunday. I'm speculating that Apple will start rolling out an iPhone-based point of sale system, but most Internet rumor sites are pointing to a new business-oriented Genius Bar concept called "Joint Venture"; the idea is that Apple would provide businesses with a paid support option that includes on-site visits.

Finally... Steve Jobs: not dead yet. He thinks he'll go for a walk.

Stay tuned for more news!

Downtown Raleigh Happenings
Wednesday, 2011 February 16 - 10:14 pm
Two restaurant closings to announce this week.

Cherry Bomb Grill, which just opened a few months ago, is closing. According to their Facebook page: "Cherry Bomb Grill will be reopening as a different restaurant/bar concept in March. It will, however, as previously stated, no longer be Cherry Bomb Grill, nor will it be Cherry Bomb Grill with a new name."

There were many issues with that place. It was supposed to be a retro, pin-up themed burger-and-beer place, but the giant bar and the TV screens made the place feel more like an ordinary sports bar. The signature burger was decent, but none of the other food we had there was very good. And I never once saw any of the waitresses dressed like a pin-up girl.

Also closing: Glenwood South institution Bogart's American Grill. Bogart's was a pretty trendy place back in 1998, but the menu doesn't seem so novel anymore, and the execution from the kitchen is inconsistent. At night, the fickle Glenwood South crowd no longer thinks of Bogart's as a singles hotspot.

It's prime real estate and whoever claims the spot will enjoy about six months of trendy fame. But as with any restaurant, the quality of the food will determine its long-term success. Let's hope for something interesting and unique.

Well Hello Blog
Monday, 2011 February 7 - 8:54 pm
What has it been, a month? Hmm, Kato No Blogging Month... Kanoblomo?

So yeah, I've been slack. My normal sources of material are dry: college football season is over; I'm not watching American Idol this year, what with Simon Cowell being gone and all; and the frozen lunch experiment is over (though I have eaten a few new ones lately; I'll post reviews of those soon). Still, there are still things going on, and I don't want this blog to go dormant. So:

In Apple news, Verizon has rapidly sold out of their initial stock of iPhones. Some surveys have suggested that up to half of Verizon's Android customers are considering switching to the iPhone. Now we'll really see what happens when there's a level playing field.

In more Apple wannabe news, there are dozens of tablets lining up to be the #1 imitator of the iPad. Seriously, doesn't anyone have an original idea any more? And here's the thing: either the tablets are significantly more expensive than the iPad ($800 for the upcoming Motorola Xoom), or they're smaller (7" screens). The brilliant thing about Apple's product lineup lately is that they've secured the best prices on components, and other manufacturers simply can't compete.

Pundits think that Google is going to follow in Microsoft's footsteps and chase Apple out of the mobile computing market, but don't forget that Microsoft had IBM as a hardware partner in the early going. Google is relying on Samsung, Motorola, and HTC. Things are not the same here. And anyway, by the time tablet manufacturers have caught up to the iPad, Apple will already have moved on to its next big thing.

I did think the Xoom SuperBowl commercial was clever, even though Motorola was setting up a straw man. It's not like Apple has really taken over the world... they've just taken over the people who have taste.

Speaking of SuperBowl commercials, I liked the Volkswagen Darth Vader, the Faith Hill "Your Rack is Unreal", and the BridgeStone "Reply to All". The Coke and the Pepsi commercials were cute. There were a lot of losers, though: the Chatter.com commercials didn't work at all. The GoDaddy commercials were lousy. And the GroupOn Tibet commercial with Timothy Hutton? Tasteless.

I give Chrysler props for their edgy pro-Detroit Chrysler Eminem commercial. But people know that Chrysler is essentially owned by Fiat now, right?

Anyway... sorry for the long absence. More blog posts will be forthcoming in the next few days.

The Brady Hoke Era Begins
Saturday, 2011 January 15 - 12:50 pm
Four days ago, former Michigan assistant Brady Hoke was introduced as Michigan's new head football coach, replacing the fired Rich Rodriguez. Three years ago, when Rodriguez was hired, I never thought I'd be typing those words.

At the press conference, reporters and former players were positively fawning over Hoke. He's a "Michigan man". He'll "restore toughness" to the program. He's a "player's coach". He said all the right things and people just ate it up.

I can't help but think that Hoke seems to be getting a honeymoon that Rodriguez never enjoyed. Rodriguez was derided for his folksy manner; he was discredited for winning in a weak conference; he was criticized for running off recruits and players by bringing in a new system. (That last criticism was mainly centered around Ryan Mallett, and it wasn't a fair point: Mallett had made up his mind to leave before Rodriguez was even hired.) Hoke isn't all that different from Rodriguez in 2008, except for this whole "Michigan man" thing, and the fact that Rodriguez had a much better track record when he came in. As many folks on mgoblog have pointed out: if Hoke had been a former Michigan State assistant, there is zero chance he would have been hired at Michigan strictly on his own merits. For me, that's a red flag.

But I'll support Hoke and I'll support the program, because Michigan football should not be about politics. (I still find it weird that Michigan fans actively rooted for Rodriguez to fail, even if that meant seeing Michigan lose, just because they wanted him out.) I think Hoke may be a decent coach. But right now there's really no way to tell how successful he'll be.

Hoke brings with him his offensive coordinator Al Borges. Borges runs a modified West Coast Offense (the "Gulf Coast Offense", as he called it; will it be the "Great Lakes Coast Offense at Michigan?), which is a lot like what we ran under Lloyd Carr. Oh yeah, back then all the grumpy alumni complained how Michigan's offense was predictable and outdated. Run, run, incomplete pass, punt... hopefully we won't see a return to that.

One last regret... we've lost the chance to see what our dynamic spread offense could have become. We were already one of the top offenses in the country with a sophomore quarterback. What would we have been next year?

Go Blue.

Rip, Mix, Burn
Wednesday, 2010 December 29 - 2:22 pm
Back in 2001, I bought the original iPod, with 5GB of storage and the monochrome display and the mechanical wheel. It was a marvel of engineering at the time. I even took it running with me, though it was a bit bulky and heavy; it tended to pull my shorts down if I had it clipped to my waist.

Nine years and several generations of iPods later, I'm finally getting around to ripping all my CDs to iTunes.

Maybe I Saw the Future
Saturday, 2010 December 18 - 10:45 am
Normally no one really wants to hear about the dream you had last night. Along with your views on politics, it's right up there on the list of "topics you talk about for your own pleasure".

So in other words, it's perfect blog material.

This one really is interesting, though. At least, I thought so. I dreamed that Amy Sedaris had released a new Christmas CD, and she was on a talk show promoting it. This probably had something to do with seeing Amy Sedaris on "The Colbert Report" a few nights back. Anyway, I don't remember all of the tracks, but I remember a few of them:

...
3. You Can't Have Nosy Neighbors If You Wanna F--- Around
...
7. All Night Red Bull Party
8. I Stole My Friend's Insulin
9. Funerals Suck
...

I also don't know what these had to do with Christmas, but I suppose that's the nature of dreams.

Ms. Sedaris, if you choose to produce a new album, feel free to use these ideas. Merry Christmas.
