Triangle Area Voter Guide 2006, Part 1: U.S. Congress and Statewide Races | Monday, 2006 November 6 - 9:26 am |
Tomorrow is election day! Here are my endorsements for U.S. Congress and North Carolina statewide races. My endorsements are in boldface. U.S. Congressional RacesU.S. Congress District 2 (D) Bob Etheridge (R) Dan Mansell Mansell believes illegal aliens are the number one problem in our district. He also supports privatization of Social Security, and a (regressive) consumption tax to replace the (progressive) income tax. No thanks, Dan. Incumbent Bob Etheridge has been an effective advocate of local issues, and there's no reason to replace him with a Republican. U.S. Congress District 4 (D) David Price (R) Steve Acuff Steve Acuff also believes illegal immigrants are our top problem, and he's also a vehement anti-abortionist and a flat-tax supporter. David Price's priorities are balancing the federal budget, creating jobs, and improving education. U.S. Congress District 13 (D) Brad Miller (R) Vernon Robinson This one is a no-brainer. Vernon Robinson has been running a ridiculous and vicious campaign. Two highlights: first, he's insinuated that Miller is gay because his wife hasn't had children. The truth is that his wife had a hysterectomy two decades ago. Second, his latest attack ad says we shouldn't vote for Miller because he's gotten the endorsement of Muslim Americans. Vernon, last I checked, Muslim Americans were still Americans, and we weren't rounding them up and putting them into internment camps. State Judicial RacesSupreme Court Chief Justice Rusty Duke Sarah Parker Though Duke claims to oppose "judicial activism", I'm suspicious that he's anxious to use the courts as a vehicle for banning abortion and eroding constitutional liberties. He touts his conservative credentials loudly. Parker seems to have a stronger grasp of jurisprudence and appears to be more neutral. Supreme Court Associate Justice Rachel Lea Hunter Mark D. Martin Rachel Lea Hunter has issues. Her web site borders on paranoia. I'd support her as a legislator maybe, but I'm not sure she's got the temperament to be a judge. Even the state Democratic party has withheld their endorsement for her. Supreme Court Associate Justice Eric Levinson Patricia Timmons-Goodson Supreme Court Associate Justice Ann Marie Calabria Robin Hudson Calabria has always rubbed me the wrong way, for some reason. Hudson is an impressive woman and she's picked up a long list of endorsements. She can add mine, for what it's worth. Court of Appeals Judge Kris Bailey Robert C. (Bob) Hunter Bailey has the endorsement of our two Republican senators, but says he doesn't take money from lawyers. I think that's a positive spin on "all lawyers endorse my opponent". Court of Appeals Judge Linda Stephens Donna Stroud Like the Hunter/Bailey race, Stephens has an endorsement list a mile long, where Stroud gets endorsements from Dole and Burr. Plus Stephens rescues kitties at the SPCA. |
