Triangle Area Voter Guide 2006, Part 2: Wake County Races | Monday, 2006 November 6 - 12:55 pm |
Tomorrow is election day! Here are my endorsements for Wake County local elections. My endorsements are in boldface. See Part 1 for statewide and U.S. Congressional Races. N.C. SenateN.C. Senate District 14 (D) Vernon Malone (R) Richard Doeffinger Doeffinger is waaaaay out on the far right; he thinks we shouldn't teach contraception to kids, and he's strongly anti-abortion. I suppose that makes him in favor of teen pregnancies! N.C. Senate District 15 (D) Dorothy (Gerry) Bowles (R) Neal Hunt Hunt is the co-sponsor of a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. N.C. Senate District 16 (D) Janet Cowell N.C. Senate District 17 (R) Richard Stevens N.C HouseN.C. House District 33 (D) Bernard Allen Bernard Allen died in October, but voting for him will ensure that Dan Blue will be his replacement. N.C. House District 34 (D) Grier Martin (R) J. H. Ross From Ross' web page: "The Christian Faith will in no way be hindered or infringed upon. Christian principles are believed by the majority to be the foundation of our Nation, and that majority will be protected." Ah, so we should violate the 1st Amendment in the Bill of Rights and protect Christianity above all other religions? Feh. N.C. House District 35 (D) Jennifer Weiss N.C. House District 36 (D) Greer Beatty (R) Nelson Dollar This is almost a toss-up. Dollar is a fairly moderate Republican, and I don't find much objectionable about him. But Greer Beatty is a political newcomer and I like the idea of putting a working mom into office. N.C. House District 37 (D) Ed Ridpath (R) Paul Stam Stam is anti-abortion and anti-gay marriage, and when asked to name the number one issue he would fix, he listed seven things. I'd vote against him just for that. N.C. House District 38 (D) Deborah K. Ross N.C. House District 39 (D) Linda Coleman (R) John W. Blackwell Coleman is an experienced legislator and has a masters degree in public administration. Blackwell, uh, ran a hardware store and has a high school diploma. N.C. House District 40 (R) Marilyn Avila Even though she's on the ballot unopposed, I can't endorse her. Write in your favorite cartoon character instead. N.C. House District 41 (D) Ty Harrell (R) J. Russell Capps Capps' top priorities are illegal immigration and an anti-gay marriage amendment. I just want someone who will concentrate on real issues that affect people. Wake County CourtsSuperior Court Judge District 10B Ripley Rand Paul C. Ridgeway Close one here. Neither candidate is objectionable. Superior Court Judge District 10C Daniel Garner Paul G. Gessner Garner's web site has a disturbing reference to Terry Schiavo on it, as if to say, "If I were that district court judge, she'd still be alive." Hmm. District Court Judge District 10 Craig Croom District Court Judge District 10 James R. Fullwood District Court Judge District 10 Joyce Hamilton District Court Judge District 10 Aida Doss Havel Vince Rozier I like both these candidates, but I'm leaning slightly towards Havel because of her emphasis on respect and civility in the courtroom. District Court Judge District 10 Kristin Ruth District Court Judge District 10 Anne B. Salisbury District Attorney District 10 (D) C. Colon Willoughby Other Wake County ElectionsWake County Clerk of Superior Court (D) Nancy (Lorrin) Freeman (R) Janet Pueschel Close one. I think Pueschel is doing a good job, but I think Freeman has a better vision on how technology can improve court efficiency. Wake County Sheriff (D) John H. Baker (R) Donnie Harrison I'm not strongly opinionated. Both candidates are experienced sheriffs. And they'd both be just as likely to give me a speeding ticket. Wake County Commissioner District 1 (D) Donald Mial (R) Joe Bryan Kind of a toss-up here. Bryan believes that traffic congestion is a top issue here (and I agree), but his solution is to build more roads instead of exploring alternatives. Mial believes that gangs are our number one problem, which I don't believe is true. Wake County Commissioner District 2 (D) Lindy Brown (R) Phil Jeffreys Jeffreys supports regional transportation in the form of an improved bus system. It's a start. Lindy Brown worked at Dorothea Dix, and I don't fault her for that, but I fear it may skew her priorities in office. Wake County Commissioner District 3 (D) Martha Brock (R) Tony Gurley Similar to the District 2 race... Gurley's emphasis is on infrastructure, and Brock's emphasis is on mental health. It's not that I don't think we need to improve our mental health system; I just don't believe it's our number one local issue. Wake County Commissioner District 7 (D) Rodger Koopman (R) Paul Y. Coble I just can't endorse Coble, the former mayor of Raleigh. Wake County Soil and Water Conservation Board Thomas Wayne Allen Daryl Baker Joy Elliott Guy P. Meilleur F. Carlyle Teague Joe E. Teague, Jr. Lewis E. Wells Donnie L. Woodlief Honestly, I don't know much about these candidates. I'm selecting the incumbents because of their experience. Wake County School Bond Referendum YES. This is a tough one. I've never voted against a bond referendum in my life, but this is for just shy of a billion dollars to finance school construction and reconstruction. While I definitely believe we need solutions to school overcrowding, and that we need to fix some of our dilapidated buildings, I'm just not sure a general obligation bond is the right way to go about it. It's true that other forms of financing could cost more, but perhaps that would force administrators to come up with more cost-effective solutions to the problems. I'm on the fence here... vote your conscience and your wallet on this one. |

Nice job Ken. Well, except for that "nearly a tossup" line on the Beaty-Dollar race. I know Greer and her husband and her kids and she'll make a tremendous congresscritter. Her opponent Nelson Dollar, btw, while not a raving wingnut *is* beholden to the fundamentalist vote. |

Wow... That is almost exactly how I voted. Great minds think alike (fools seldom differ) |
