Weekend Update

Blue skies, smiling at me...

For the past week, I've had the Irving Berlin song "Blue Skies" in my head. But, I only know the two lines of the chorus ("Blue skies smiling at me / Nothing but blue skies do I see"), and those two lines have been repeating over and over and over. I'm just about ready to drill a hole in my head to make it stop. Every time I see the word "blue", the song pops back into my head.

That being said, there were plenty of blue skies here in North Carolina today: it was a sunny and breezy 70°F (21°C). Apex Community Park has a nice two-mile trail around a lake, and that's where I usually go running. My two-mile time today was 18:35. If my knees hold up, I'm hoping to whittle that down to 16:00 by the end of the summer, and I also hope to be able to complete four miles in 36:00. (Not exactly world-record pace, but it's better than sitting on my duff drinking beer.) Now that Daylight Savings Time has started, I should be able to go running after work on a regular basis. We'll see how it goes.

While I was running, I came up with several things that I do like about living in the South:

- There are swans here almost all the time.
- When passing a stranger in the park, it's perfectly acceptable to smile and say hello.
- People are outside wearing shorts on April 3rd. Um, correction: WOMEN are outside wearing shorts on April 3rd.

Speaking of shorts, what's with the fad of having shorts with writing across the ass? One teenage girl had the word IMPACT in big white letters printed on her ass. I wasn't quite sure what to make of that. You know, ladies, it's not like you need to do anything extra to make me look there. Next thing you know, there'll be babydoll t-shirts with the word SQUEEZE written across each boob.

Other than that, this weekend I've been trying to catch up on my newspaper-reading. I don't really have a good reason for continuing to receive the daily newspaper, but I can't bring myself to cancel the subscription. I get so far behind that the newspaper is more like a monthly magazine for me... an 8000-page monthly magazine.

But if I didn't read the paper, I might never have found out that the TV show "The Greatest American Hero" is out on DVD. Does anyone else remember this show? It had a catchy theme song "Believe It Or Not", sung by Joey Scarbury. But not only that, the show had an oddly appealing Gen-X cynicism to it. I remember I loved the show when I watched it as a kid.

And, if not for the newspaper, I wouldn't have found out about our new, surprisingly strict traffic laws:

Wow, I'm going to have to be more careful.

Swans? Oh, you mean Canadian Geese. http://images.google.com/images?q=canadian%20geese&num=20&hl=en&lr=&c2coff=1&sa=N&tab=wi

They seem sort of cute, don't they. Wait until you get close and they start to hiss. Wait till they crap all over your yard. I equate them with squirrels, though I hate squirrels a lot more.

Well, there are a lot of Canadian geese around, but I really did mean swans. I see them all the time at the park. I've even seen trumpeter swans here. I have a fondness for swans from reading E.B. White's The Trumpet of the Swan as a kid.

I thought you were referring to the "blue skies through the tears" line from Rocky Horror. I haven't been to that in a while... probably four or five years. The theatre here did a fantastic job. There was a full cast and all props were allowed and encouraged. I thought of you, of course.

I loved the Greatest American Hero, and I can sing the entire theme song.

I also love the Irving Berlin song, and I too get possessed by it - and I too only know a few lines from it.
