Apple Watch: Rumor Roundup
Sunday, 2005 April 3 - 5:03 pm
Signs point to some big announcements in the near future.

There are a number of indications that Apple will have some big announcements on Tuesday:

- Amazon.com has a number of rebates on Apple products that end Tuesday.
- MacUser is postponing its April 1st publication so it can report on "big things" that are "about to happen in the world of computing".
- The Mac rumor sites are buzzing with excitement about new products.

Here's the rundown on some of the rumors:

Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger". The newest version of the Mac OS X operating system is said to have reached "Gold Master" status, meaning that it's ready for production. This rumor seems very plausible.

New PowerMac G5s. We've been waiting for this for a while. People are hoping for 3GHz PowerMac G5s, with twin dual-core 970MP processors (for a total of four processing cores). If such a product were announced, it would be a machine with 2.4 times the CPU capacity of the current top-end Mac, and it would likely blow the doors off any PC currently in production. This rumor is somewhat shakier, but I've got my fingers crossed.

New iBook mini. Apple has been out of the subnotebook business ever since the days of the Powerbook Duo 2300c, and that's a long time. With all the other "mini" products that Apple has introduced, an iBook mini doesn't seem that far-fetched. But this rumor seems to be largely just speculation.

New iMacs and eMacs. The iMac G5 isn't likely to see a major redesign, but a speed bump seems likely. The eMac is rumored for a big overhaul, though. I can't really imagine what kind of changes might be in store, except perhaps a different form factor and a switch to the G5 processor. Here's a thought: a big rectangular monolith (somewhat like the old Macintosh SE, or like an oversized iPod) in white lexan plastic... that would be pretty cool.

Macintosh Media Center. With Steve Jobs proclaiming this to be the year of High Definition, some sort of home-entertainment video device seems logical. There are also rumors that Apple is getting into satellite video delivery. Hmm. This rumor is pretty sketchy right now, but it wouldn't be a total shock, either.

Even if some of these rumors don't pan out, there are indications that we'll have a string of announcements over the next couple of months. Should be exciting!
